My cat lost a tooth, gum swollen. Should I take her to the vet?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

My black tabby cat is currently 2 years old, this morning we found that one of her top tooth (fang?) was coming out of her mouth, upon further inspection we found that her tooth had fallen out. Should we take her to the vet, she shows no signs of pain but her gum where the tooth fell out looks alittle swollen.

It is probably a good thing that that the tooth fell out as there was likely infection that loosened it and that was painful. If the swelling goes back and she has no pain, then you do not need to take her to a vet, However, check the other teeth as well. If there is tartar, or if the gums are red, you should have her mouth checked by the vet as she may need a dental cleaning.

    If the tooth is not bothering her at this time there is no need to go to an emergency vet this weekend, however I would make an appointment with your veterinarian to have this examined. If there is indeed a tooth stuck in the roof of her mouth then it should probably be removed. Cats do not always show pain, however if it hurts, she will not let you touch it. If that is the case please take her to a vet today.

Yes! I would take him to the vet for an exam. The swelling you are seeing is due to infection. Over time the infection will loosen the dental ligaments and the teeth will fall out. This is a painful condition and should be addressed with a dental cleaning, some antibiotics and maybe a long term antimicrobial rinse for the mouth that you can do at home. There is no need to take him in to your veterinarian at this time if the area where he lost the tooth is not hurting. Since you obviously have scheduled a dental cleaning for Milo, your vet can inspect the area during the dental cleaning while he is under sedation. The vet will also do dental radiographs to check for retained roots and neck lesions. These will need to be removed.

Cat has swollen gum from loose tooth. Are natural antibiotics safe?
Not really. Natural stuff that have antiseptic effect like garlic and onion are toxic to cats. For a swollen gum from a loose tooth you can use an ice-pack compress for 30-60 seconds, if Fish will allow you. If she is in pain, you may have to take her to your local vets to get pain killers by injection or/and remove the loose tooth.

I would recommend a check up to make sure the whole tooth(canine) has gone, without any remnants of it still inside gum. The swelling should go down even without any treatment in the next 24 hours. From the pictures i can indeed confirm that there doesn't seem to be an obvious gum disease and the teeth look normal as well, nevertheless some cats lose some of their teeth quite early in life, sometimes due to bad chewing habits, sometimes randomly.

Please make an appointment to have Gia seen by a vet as soon as possible. A swollen jaw can indicate infection, a foreign body stuck in the jaw, or a mass/ growth in the area, all of which can be extremely painful and require treatment by a veterinarian. Pain medications meant for humans can be very dangerous (and even deadly) for cats, so I do not recommend giving any to your kitty without consulting with your vet.
