Can my new puppy get leptospirosis from the garden before shots?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 23 days old

Hello, I unfortunately I recently lost my puppy to leptospirosis, he didn't have a good start to life before we got him, he was malnourished and had campylobactor so our vet said his body wasn't strong enough to fight when he contracted leptospirosis. We are now getting another puppy, same breed and age but completely healthy. Should we be worried about this puppy getting leptospirosis aswell from the garden before he has his second jab in just over 3 weeks time?

Hi there and thanks for posting this morning!

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that comes from widlife urine and causes kidney failure as you already understand. It is an important bacteria to vaccine against every year, especially if you live in a area where there is an increased risk. I would recommend Oscar get vaccinated against leptospirosis. He will need a series of two vaccines- one initially then a booster in 3-4 weeks. After that, he should be vaccinated against letpo every year.

Thank you for your question and I hope this has helped!
