Does my dog's 6-in-1 lepto vaccine still protect him after a year?

Leptospirosis is frequently spread via the urine of infected rodents and other mammals. If your dog spends time outdoors or "in the field", the lepto vaccine should be considered. There are many strains, or serovars, of leptospirosis that can infect dogs. It is important to confirm with your veterinarian that the vaccine protects against the 4 most common serovars as opposed to a vaccine that has only 2. An initial vaccine is administered and followed up with a booster 3-4 weeks later, then yearly afterwards.

That would depend on the brand of the vaccine but generally speaking it is done once a year, a part from the the first time that is usually repeated two times. He can have it at 9 weeks (first shot) which can be repeated at 12 weeks of age and then at 1 year. While the lepto vaccine is not a core vaccine and probably never will, it is important to consider it in areas where the disease incidence is high. If there have been some cases nearby, I would not take my chances and I would recommend the vaccine. Keep in mind that even though there may not be cases reported just exactly where you are at, that does not mean that there has not been any leptospirosis, it just means that it has not been reported. I think you are better off going forward with the vaccine especially if recommended by your veterinarian who knows the area well and also knows Ivy well. Have a great day!

The first time a pet receives the Lepto vaccination they should get the initial vaccine and then a booster 3 weeks later. After that, then they just get one yearly booster. If the pet received the initial vaccine but did not get the booster 3 weeks later, then essentially you should start over with two vaccines three weeks apart. Hope this clarifies. Hi there and thanks for posting this morning! Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that comes from widlife urine and causes kidney failure as you already understand. It is an important bacteria to vaccine against every year, especially if you live in a area where there is an increased risk. I would recommend Oscar get vaccinated against leptospirosis. He will need a series of two vaccines- one initially then a booster in 3-4 weeks. After that, he should be vaccinated against letpo every year. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Panacur is a medication, it is a dewormer. I have not found it to be dangerous for any breed or size dog. Leptospirosis is a bacteria excreted in wild animal urine. A dog or human can get this bacterial infection from ingesting contaminated water or the bacteria can penetrate wounds. It causes kidney and liver failure. Dogs get very sick with this infection and can die. If Nacho will hike, go swimming, camping, you live in a city and he may drink from puddles (rat urine) or you have water on your property you should vaccinate him. Again, I have not found that a particular breed is more sensitive that another to the vaccine. Since Nacho is small I would not give him the Leptospirosis vaccine with the DHPP. I would separate it out and give it by itself. I personally do not give tony dogs too many vaccines at once. He needs 2 vaccines for leptospirosis, 3 weeks apart then yearly. Every dog, regardless of size, gets the same volume. The DHPPL does have Leptospirosis in it. You need to weigh the pros and cons of giving that vaccine versus his risk of contracting the bacterial infection. If his risk of getting it is minimal then do not vaccinate. I hope this helps!

It depends on what is listed on the label of the vaccine. Please check it to be sure it lists leptospirosis. To answer your second question we have to know what the supplement is for in order to know if it is safe for the kidneys. Are we treating the kidneys? Are we treating for arthritis? Some supplements are filtered by the kidneys while others aren't. Also most medications are safe for most pets as long as there isn't already a kidney malfunction already there. Just because it is filtered by the kidneys does not mean it will automatically cause problems with the kidneys.
