My puppy pees often with an inverted vulva. Is it a UTI or normal?

It can be hard to differentiate puppy behavior from disease without testing the urine. Based on these results, medication can be prescribed if a urinary tract infection is found. While it is normal (although frustrating) to have “good” days and “bad” days while house training a puppy, the episodes you describe may be an indication of something more serious, such as a UTI. This is definitely possible if Phoebe is straining to urinate, urinating small amounts, or has reddish colored urine and if you notice her licking her vagina more frequently. If the antibiotics didn't make much difference, I'd be suspicious of puppy vaginitis, which is a relatively common inflammatory condition that can lead to accidents and sometimes make them more susceptible to urinary infections. It generally resolves with age. I would also check for a stricture (this may require sedation as they don't love vaginal palpation...). For now, since your vet hasn't been able to check a urinalysis, that would be the first priority. See if you can get a sample- sneak a small container under her when she squats. If you have to hold onto the sample a few hours before dropping it at your vet, stick it in the fridge, but the fresher the better. If you're having no luck, your vet can collect a sterile sample via cystocentesis. Hope this helps.

Hi, puppies can get urinary tract infections. I would watch her for urinating more frequently and in small amounts. At 7 months, she should be mostly house trained so this is not likely a behavior issue but it is still possible. I would take her to the vet for an exam if it happens a third time. They can put her on some antibiotics for this and she should be fine. Good luck!

Your puppy may have a urinary tract infection. Since puppies can deteriorate very quickly (they heal quickly as well), I suggest you make an appointment with your veterinarian. He may need to be prescribed antibiotics and pain medicine.

Make sure she is going regularly and not having to hold it too long and that she is getting plenty of fluids. The discoloration and increase in frequency can be signs of a urinary infection. Since everything else is normal, you do not need to get her seen as an emergency tonight, but do recommend a urine sample at your vet as this can make house training more difficult and be uncomfortable for her if left untreated.
