Why does my puppy hump my arm and avoid head pats when I'm lying down?

It may be playful behavior, but it can also be due to stress, boredom or dominance. When she does it, offer a stern "No" and gently push her off your arm. Praise and reward her if she complies. If she persists, get up and move or place her in a separate room until she settles down. Be consistent.

Congratulations on adding Teddy to your family! Puppies can be frustrating at times. The behavior described is consistent with a frustrated puppy. It is not unusual for a puppy that is frustrated to bark, growl or completely ignore things that you say. He is not trying to exert dominance he just may not really understand what you are asking. Your best bet for getting Teddy to follow your directions is to have a consistent training plan and use high-value rewards. When you tell him no, he doesn't really understand what you want him to do. You will likely have better luck telling him what you would like him to do. For example, if you want him to walk nicely on a leash it's better to teach him a look command rather than just yank on the leash to get him to go where you want. Using a look command will tell him what you want him to do which is keep his eyes on you rather than what's going on in the neighborhood. Hi there. Many dogs don't like to be petted on top of the head, since it can feel threatening for them. I would suggest petting her on the chest or under the chin instead. Over time, as she becomes more comfortable around you, she may be more willing to allow you to pet her head.

I see that Bailey is still very young, about three months old :) This is very normal behavior for a puppy this age - they want to put their mouth on everything and would rather bite than be held or petted. This is how they explore the world, and how they instinctively want to play. Humping is also a common attention-seeking behavior in young puppies, or can be a sign of over-excitement or frustration. The good news is, these issues will improve on their own as he gets older; it's a normal developmental stage for puppies, just like toddlers who grab everything with their hands and may not always want to be hugged or held. At this age, you may only be able to pet him or cuddle with him when he's sleepy - this is okay. If he bites your hands, just stop petting and ignore him until he calms down, or grab one of his toys and use that to engage him in play. Most dogs are no longer mouthing nearly as much by the time they are 8-12 months old, so hang in there - just be patient and consistent, and he will get calmer and easier to pet as he gets older.

It sounds like he may be humping you. Dogs do his as a sign of dominance and not always as a sexual thing. This could be just a personality change as he has gotten older or an anxiety thing of anything has hanged in the house (different people, different pets, different schedules, construction in or around the house, etc). If it continues, you could try a calming collar like adaptil. Also, you can tell him “no” and walk away when he does it to help him understand this isn’t ok. I hope this helps!

It's not uncommon that puppies don't lick. Puppies are however typically mouthy and bite (in playfulness) a lot. One thing that helps to train puppies not to bite is to imitate another puppy. As soon as Teddy puts his mouth on you, make a high pitched yelp sound and then completely ignore Teddy. Pay attention to him as soon as he calms down. If you are consistent, Teddy will quickly learn that he will not get attention if he bites. Licking behavior typically evolves as puppies get older. There are things you can do to deter him from this behavior such as bitter apple spray and apply it to the area on your body that he licks the most. I would also consider using a spray bottle filled with water and when he does this behavior, spray him in the face and say "off!". These two techniques worked well for my dog when he was exhibiting the exact same problems and has worked well for other clients of mine that I have recommended these techniques to.
