Is it safe to give my puppy honey to prevent spring pollen allergies?

Unfortunately, by law it is illegal for the experts at Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to give the dose information for any drug, including OTC drugs, without seeing the animal in person first. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for your dog. You need to check with Chewy's vet to see if it's safe to give him, and the vet can give you the dose.

A very small amount of honey (1 tsp twice a day) is fine for dogs- it does not really matter what kind. I would not use any more than that though because it is pure sugar and not the best treat for dogs. I prefer peanut butter if you want to give him a tsp if sowmhung yummy to lick at. Unless you go for testing & a subsequent desensitization protocol, we really can not cure allergies. Almost all dogs will react to an allergen with skin symptoms, so your Brooklyn is showing typical signs. If the Benadryl seems to help, you can use it as needed. There are other OTC antihistamines available ( see petplace.com/antihistamine use in dogs ), but some of the best are available through your veterinarian. Apoquel, a pill you give daily, or as needed, and an injection called Cytopoint that will give Brooklyn relief for up to 2 months are now available. Otherwise, minimizing outdoor times when pollen counts are high, regular bathing in an oatmeal based shampoo in cool water, or even just wiping her down immediately after she comes in from outdoors will all help.

Ingestion of large amount of sugar may produce vomiting and transient diarrhea but Kahlua should not develop any more serious symptoms. Please, offer your puppy small amounts of water every 30-60 minutes and monitor her closely at home. If she does develop diarrhea and profuse vomiting, you may have to take her to your local vets to get symptomatic treatment.

There is no harm in giving her honey, though it may not help at all. When dogs are in heart failure, or have a history or congestive heart failure or heart disease, usually a cough is due to one of 2 causes-- 1) fluid in the lungs OR 2) the enlargement of the heart pushes on the on the large airways, causing a "tickle" type cough response. Take her in to see your vet. It would be best to have some chest X-rays taken to see if she is in congestive heart failure, and to monitor the size of the heart. Yes. Honey is fine to give. It is a natural anti-inflammatory and can help with some of the inflammation and irritation along her respiratory tract (nose and throat). However she should still receive medical treatment through your vet and get on a short course of antibiotics.
