How can I tell if my puppy is healthy or showing signs of sickness?

It's impossible to know if this is significant or not without more history and likely a physical exam. If Stormy has been running around playing all day, this is likely normal because she is tired. If there is not a good reason for her to be tired, she is likely sick. If you suspect Stormy is ill, I recommend to have her examined by her veterinarian if it lasts beyond 24 hours or if she starts getting worse. I hope this helps.

Congrats on your new puppy! It can be anxious getting a new puppy, and I get that. Puppies do sleep a lot, but you want to see periods of where Pepper is playing. She should be active and running around when awake. If she is slow moving, doesn't want to play, doesn't want to wake up, that is not normal. For puppies that are still eating and drinking but lethargic and no signs of GI issues I would be suspicious of a couple of things: 1) puppy is just sleeping more now because he is still growing, Pitt Bull terriers and other large breed dogs can go through pretty fast growth spurts and this can definitely cause pups to sleep more. 2) If puppy is overly lethargic and running out of breathe easily or becoming intolerant to exercise or play I would be suspicious of a cardiovascular abnormality. I would recommend you schedule an appointment to have a vet do a heart auscultation (listen to the heart with microscope) to ensure your pets heart does not have any arrhythmia's or murmurs.

Poor puppy. That looks like digested food that he vomited up. He may have eaten something that he shouldn't have. Therefore I would try to fast him for 12 hours and then offer him small amounts of boiled chicken and plain rice. If he is still vomiting, lethargic, or has lack of appetite and diarrhea, then I would be concerned he may have either intestinal parasites or has contracted the deadly parvovirus. It is best to have him seen by your local veterinarian if he is not getting better. Hopefully he just got into something he shouldn't have and will show improvement within the next 12 to 24 hours. All these signs are very concerning and point to a possible viral infection or metabolic disease. You need to take your dog to a veterinarian or PetER right away as he may be having a serious infection that needs to be tended to. Distemper comes to mind, a liver shunt and/or meningitis.

It is possible that Austin is starting to mellow, or that he could be becoming more used to his life in your home now and is settling down a bit. I would monitor him for changes in appetite, vomiting, diarreah, water intake. If any of these change he should be seen by the vet. You can take his temperature rectally with a lubricated thermometer to be sure he has no fever- normal temperature is 100 to 102.5. Also check his gums to be sure they are moist and pink.

Unfortunately, this is not normal behavior for a young puppy and is pretty concerning. At less than two months old, your puppy needs to eat regularly or he risks having low blood sugar, which can cause serious health problems. Vomiting is not typically caused by stress and all these signs make me worry about a more serious illness. Please have him seen by a veterinarian right away because his lack of appetite and vomiting are very serious.
