My puppy is hacking and throwing up clear liquid. What should I do?

This is likely an upper respiratory infection called Kennel Cough, this usually resolves within 2 weeks without treatment, but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.

It could be a respiratory infection, it could be a collapsing trachea, it could be kennel cough, or it could be something more serious like heart disease. The most common reason for a dog this age to be coughing would be kennel cough. However, usually it is a dry cough and not a wet/congested cough. It could be from overheating but it is not very likely. I would just monitor her for now and if she is eating/drinking and acting otherwise normally then I would not be overly concerned unless the behavior continues. If she is not acting normally then she needs to see a vet for an exam.

Be sure that you know if she is vomiting (belly goes in and out) versus regurgitation (burps up fluid) versus a cough with a terminal retch (cough is first followed by a gag of fluid). I don't know how old Honey is but she only weighs 5 lbs and that means if she is truly vomiting then she could get dehydrated quickly. If the vomiting is non-stop she should be taken to your Vet if open or an emergency hospital. If it has been a couple of times remove all water and food. Do not offer water for 4-6 hours of no vomiting and offer small amounts and ice chips. Do not offer food until 12-24 hours of no vomiting and offer it as a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day as small frequent meals. If she continues to vomit while fasted or once she starts eating she needs to see a Vet. Causes of vomiting are: intestinal parasites, foreign body (something is stuck and needs surgery to remove), dietary indiscretion, viral or bacterial infections, metabolic conditions, toxin ingestion, food allergy or intolerance. This sounds like kennel cough. If she’s been around other dogs a few days ago she may have gotten this from them. Usually if you keep her quiet and she continues eating and drinking she should get over this without treatment in a week or so. If the coughing worsens or she stops eating or becomes lethargic then bring her in for an exam and treatment. They will probably give her antibiotics and perhaps something to stop the coughing. There are a few things that come to mind for causes of Dory's symptoms: the more common reason is kennel cough, which is a tracheal cough from bacterial or viral infections. The cough is "goose honk" like and is worse at night and with activity. The dog usually eats and drinks. The cough can trigger the gag reflex which causes the dog to make a gagging sound and motion that sometimes is productive. Dogs can get kennel cough from boarding, grooming, doggie day care, dog parks, playing with other dogs or even from us if we were around a coughing dog. The other possibility is she ate something that irritated her esophagus like a raw hide. I would have her seen by your Vet Wednesday. Most vets treat kennel cough with antibiotics and anti-cough medication. It usually resolves with in 2 weeks. I wish you and Dory the best!

Hello. It sounds like Farah has some esophageal irritation, or possibly even a case of tracheitis ( inflammation of the trachea ). This can be caused by some irritant she inhaled, like smoke, or she may have a case of kennel cough, also called tracheobronchitis. It may be a good idea to have her evaluated by your veterinarian in case she requires antibiotics or even an anti-inflammatory to quiet her cough.
