Why is my 6-month-old puppy making a hacking or pig-like noise?

Poor Charlie. There are a lot of different causes for coughing. He could have a severe upper respiratory infection/kennel cough, heart disease or even pneumonia. The yelping when being picked up is likely unrelated but could be due to him hurting somewhere in his back or abdomen. Both of these problems call for an exam by your vet in order to listen to his heart and lungs and also palpating his back, abdomen and other joints to find out why exactly he is helping. I would try to video the cough to help the vet make a proper diagnosis. Your vet will be able to take X-rays if needed and also get him started on the proper meds to help him feel better. They will also be able to prescribe something for the cough to help everyone rest a little better at night. I hope this helps and he starts to feel better really soon !

This can happen from a number of conditions mostly affecting the respiratory system such as congestive heart failure, pneumonia, bronchitis, among other things. Hi, It sounds like your dog may have kennel cough. This sounds like honking cough. I’d recommend an exam with your vet as your dog may need some antibiotics. She’s is likely also contagious so avoid contact with other dogs until she’s better. Hope she feels better soon.

Coughing can be associated with infection such as kennel cough, heart worm disease, pneumonia, problems with the trachea, growths or masses in the chest, and parasites amount other problems. I would encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian soon. Since he is a young dog parasites, nasal mites, and kennel cough are highest on my list of possibilities. Sometimes persistent coughing or hacking can be a signs of allergies but it can also indicate something like tracheal deviation or heart enlargement. Since it has been going on for so long, I recommend to have Brealynn examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps.

Another very likely possibility is that Chico has a collapsed trachea. You will need to take Chico to your vet for an exam and x-rays (which will rule out collapsed trachea and lung edema caused by congestive heart failure).
