Why is my dog coughing, dry heaving, and snorting like a pig?

There are quite a few things that can cause a cough like this. Some common possibilities would include allergies, chronic bronchitis, a collapsing trachea, or heart disease. If the cough has been going on for a while, I would recommend discussing options for further work-up with your vet to help determine what is causing it. Diagnostic testing such as general blood work (a CBC and chemistry panel), chest x-rays, and heartworm testing would all be helpful, if these tests haven't been done already.

Poor coco. A cough in a younger dog could be from heartworm disease, parasites, bronchitis, asthma, allergies, bacterial, viral and trachea related. I would recommend taking coco to a veterinarian since the cough has been presistent. Your veterinarian might want to do a heartworm test , x-rays or medications to help. It is like a cold with a cough humans get and causes a tickle in the throat and dry heaving type behavior. I recommend taking him to a vet for a confirmation. They may need to take a xray of his chest to make sure its not pneumonia or something stuck in his throat. If it is kennel cough, he needs medications to prevent pneumonia and to help his cough. In a youbg chihuahua thid noise could be a few things. It may be a hacking cough due to an infection such as kennel cough or it could be indicative of a physical problem such as a collapsing trachea or isdues with the soft palate/ epiglottis. As long as Hugo is breathing ok and seems bright you could hold off for tonight, but I would take him into the vet tomorrow for an exam to start getting to the bottom of this.
