Is my 6-month puppy's genital rash caused by grass when he pees?

It sounds as if your dog has a skin infection, most commonly caused by an allergy, a skin mite (Demodex) or fleas. 

The allergy could be a due to a protein in your dog’s food or an environmental allergy like to dust, pollens, grasses, etc. 

The allergy causes your dog to itch and chew at the skin which breaks down the skin barrier. This then leads to infection. Skin infections are typically characterized by large areas of hair loss, redness, crusting, flaking, and pustules. A thorough skin examination by your veterinarian should be able to determine the cause of the itch so it can be treated appropriately. Your dog will most likely need antibiotics to help clear up the infection and possibly an allergy/anti-itch medication like Apoquel, Atopica, or Cytopoint to give some relief while the infection clears up. A medicated shampoo may be beneficial as well. I would also recommend he be on a good flea control routinely too. Once the infection has resolved a long term allergy medication (like Apoquel or Cytopoint) can be given on a regular basis to prevent any future problems. Hi there, Yes, it does sound like Ronald is having an allergic reaction to the grass. Sometimes bathing with an aloe/oatmeal shampoo can help alleviate what's going on and decrease the rash, but often dogs need a small dose of steroid to stop their body from having such a reaction. As long as he is acting normal and urinating normal, I suspect this may just be a little bit of contact dermatitis. A little cocker puppy is low to the ground, so Charlie will be rubbing on grass when he goes outside and possibly picking up allergens and moisture. You can bath him with a mild puppy shampoo to see if that helps the redness. If he is licking excessively or having any difficulty urinating then he may need to see a vet.

Rashes in that area are common. It can be whats called Puppy Pyoderma or it can be more of a hygiene issue (puppies aren't very good at cleaning themselves after using the restroom). You may try using a pet wipe and cleaning her vulva and the area around it after she urinates. If it's a hygiene issue, the rash will generally start to look much better within a few days. If the rash is still present after a week or if you see it gets worse, I recommend to have Daisy examined by the veterinarian. Make sure Daisy is not excessively licking at the area as this can make it worse. I hope this helps.

Rashes around a penis are typically either caused by allergies to something he is lying on (grass, bedding, etc.), bug bites on the abdomen (ants in the grass), or from a urinary issue where he would be dribbling urine, or licking at his penis making the skin around it wet, and therefore getting a secondary skin infection. I recommend having it seen by a vet if it is irritating Dice or looks infected (any yellow/green discharge, any open wounds, etc). If it is just a little bit red, then I would recommend an E-collar to prevent self-trauma and licking which is likely making it worse, and just washing the area with water and drying it very well. Getting a urine sample checked by your vet is a good idea, especially if Dice is peeing more than usually, or straining to pee, or if there is any red discolouration of the pee. This is actually very common in puppies. It can be from a bug bite or just not cleaning and grooming well after urinating since so young. It may pop and pus will likely come out. The best thing to do is clean it with soap and water and apply neosporin. If more occur or it does not dry up and go away then see your vet for medication. Most puppies actually outgrow this, so hang in there.

She could be having an acute allergic reaction to something such as grass or some type of chemical on the ground. You can try washing her off using a mild cleanser such is Dawn dish soap or oatmeal-based pet shampoo. If it doesn't clear up within 8 to 12 hours then I would recommend having your veterinarian do an exam. In the meantime if you start scratching or itching at it you'll need to stop her as that could cause a secondary bacterial infection.
