Our two month old 1lb puppy has fleas. Is it safe to use a flea collar on her?

Flea collars do not work very well and some are toxic if ingested. I don't recommend using them on puppies, in case it falls off and the puppy tries to eat the collar. I recommend using a monthky product, like NexGard, Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution. You will also need to treat your house with an appropriate flea product.

I would not recommend using a flea collar on Grand Duchess Snugglebottoms (love her name!). Ones that you get from the supermarket are not very effective, and dogs can sometimes experience skin reactions from them. If you'd like to use on, I'd recommend Seresto. I would personally recommend using a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. I personally find them both to be effective. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash her bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home.

It doesn't say it's safe for puppies on the packaging, so no I would not use it. It won't work anyway, these "natural" collars do nothing. I would apply Revolution on Princess. Flea collars are safe for puppies and you can find ones that are specifically made for puppies in the bigger pet stores. Flea collars are somewhat effective, but not as effective as the topical and oral products for fleas. I would recommend giving those rather than getting the flea collar. The only flea collar that appears to work well is the Seresto collar. And even then, I can have a slower rate of kill for the fleas. The top products on the market our oral products such as some Perica and next guard. For most pets, these are good options that I recommend to call your veterinarian first and doublecheck. Also, you will need to treat all the pets in the household for six months to make sure you get through the entire fleet lifecycle. Best of luck.

How do I safely treat a bad flea problem on my 7-month-old puppy?

Pretty much all of the OTC flea medications are safe for 7 month-old puppies. There are several options, such a monthly topicals, flea collars, or a Seresto collar. Flea shampoos don't work well at all. Prescription oral flea preventative seem to work the best, in my opinion, so I would recommend that Grace be checked out by a vet so she can get started on one of these. Please know that it can take several months of consistent treatment to get rid of a flea infestation. Fleas don't live on the dog, they only jump on at bedtime. So, if you see a 2 or 3 fleas on Grace at one time, then there could be 20-30 fleas off of her, laying eggs to make new fleas! Great question! Flea collars are not very effective, as you are seeing unfortunately. I can give you an effective flea treatment program for Indy. First, I would give her Capstar. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes. Then follow up with a spot on treatment, such as Advantage or Revolution. This is a treatment that has to be used once a month. You will also have to disinfect the environment, as it will be a continuing source of fleas if you don't. Wash her bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. What flea treatment is safe for my 7-week-old puppy turning 8 weeks?

Revolution can be used on puppies 6 weeks of age and older, and there is no minimum weight requirement. At 7 weeks old, he can use Advantage II if the puppy weighs at least 3 pounds, or K9 Advantix II if he weighs at least 4 pounds. If you prefer a flea collar, the Seresto collar can be used on puppies at least 7 weeks of age or older. After he is eight weeks old, you can use Activyl, or Frontline Plus, as well as some of the newer oral flea control medications such as NexGard and Trifexis.
