My puppy has a flat chest and splayed legs. When should I see a vet?

It is always best to have a vet check out any new lumps/bumps on your dog. I don't think it is an emergency but I would have him examined in the next day or so. I am sorry the pictures of Tyson did not come through. dogs can be born with valgus and Vargus which are congenital leg deformities. I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian to have his legs checked out and x-rays to determine if there is a problem with the growth and formation. Unfortunately there is nothing you can really do at home. Hope that's helps!

Pictures may help but this sounds like it may be a birth defect or injury and xrays may be required to assess fully what is going on. I would recommend an urgent vet check if there is any weakness, reduced growth rate compared to the others or panting/rapid breathing

Congrats on your new puppy! It could be that Peanut has a congenital deformity causing the shorter leg. I would have her seen by a vet for a physical exam and x-rays. If it isn't causing her any problems, then it may be nothing will need to be done for it, but the vet may discuss surgical options that may apply to help with the leg. Without seeing it in person, I can't say for certain if anything needs to be done, but it's a good idea to have her seen by a vet. If she does have trouble jumping onto the bed and into your SUV, I would help her do that. Certainly there are dogs who live perfectly normal lives with just three legs, and Peanut may be one of those dogs that can live a normal life with one leg shorter than the others. You just have to adapt to her limitations, such as trouble jumping. Have her seen by a vet however to get their take on it. I hope this helps :-)

Without seeing him myself my first thought is that he has carpus valgus which is a congenital abnormality that cannot be fixed. If you really want to know if there is anything you can do you would need to take him to an orthopedic specialist for a consultation. Bone deformities are not an unusual problem for this breed. It could be that he has elbow dysplasia and depending on the severity there may be a surgery that could help him. I strongly suggest you get him to a specialist for an exam and x-rays. Hind leg hobbles are very rarely needed in young puppies. However, swimmer puppies can benefit from hobbles if they're carefully and properly placed. An inherited cause of a flat chest (pectus excavatum) is not the same thing as being a swimmer puppy and will not resolve with hobbles. You should never tape your puppy's legs unless it's under the direct guidance of your veterinarian. It's surprisingly easy to place the tape too tightly and cut off blood supply to the legs, causing more serious problems. Swimmer puppies typically require at least a month or two of treatment with hobbles, stable footing with good traction and physical therapy under the close care of a veterinarian. At this point, your best option is to take Tutina to her veterinarian for further evaluation. I hope that all goes well!

He may have Splay puppy syndrome, sometimes called Swimming Puppy Syndrome. If you really want to buy this puppy, I would have it examined by a veterinarian before buying it making sure it it is healthy. If the breeder does not want you to have it examined by a vet of YOUR choice, then I would say: hands off. If the puppy has health issues, I would not buy it either. There are many healthy puppies out there to buy.
