My 5-month-old puppy tried to eat his tooth. Is this normal?

The picture is a little blurry but it does appear to look like a tooth. Makivali should have lost all his puppy teeth by ten months old but some small breed dogs can be late in development. If you don’t know what adult teeth look like vs puppy teeth, I would recommend to have him seen by his veterinarian to know if this is a normal tooth shedding or if this is a broken tooth, tooth root abscess or other pathological process. Many times pets don’t exhibit many signs of dental pain so you can’t base a decision off how he is acting. If it’s a normal puppy tooth, no reason to change his food. I think this looks like a baby canine tooth, which would normally be falling out around this age. Usually the adult tooth is already partially growing in, so if you truly feel like this may have been an adult tooth you may want your vet to take a look.

This is a baby tooth so it’s normal to lose them. Between four and six months dogs will lose all of their baby teeth. Sometimes you won’t see them when they fall out. Poodles do sometimes have retained canine baby teeth so if those aren’t gone by seven months they may need to be removed so the adult teeth can come in properly. This is completely normal and right on schedule. These are the first teeth to fall out. Adult teeth will appear in those spots soon. The teething process takes about 6-10 weeks total. Most of the time, the teeth just seem to disappear....puppies swallow them or they end up in the grass outside, etc. Usually the last teeth to fall out are the canine or “fang” teeth. Puppies are in the process of teething from 12 weeks to 6-7 months of age, so it's completely normal to see an occasional baby tooth with a bloody root on the floor during this time :) Often, there will also be small streaks of blood on toys or chew items - this is because the pup's gums are bleeding a little, and is also normal. All of his adult teeth should be coming in within the next 2-4 weeks, so after that the problem should resolve on its own.

Swallowing her baby teeth should not cause her any problems. Often these teeth end up falling out when they are outdoors chewing on things and we never find them, but we do not have cases of dogs becoming ill or being injured from the loss of their baby teeth or these small teeth being swallowed.
