Is it safe for my puppy to drink his urine when isolated at night?

Hello. It is possible that this is some type of separation anxiety issue. The first thing to rule out is the chance this is a urinary tract infection, so a veterinary exam may be needed to rule out a few things. For the most part, if this is an anxiety problem, once these puppies are well house trained, the behavior will stop. But do mention this to your vet at Teddy's next veterinary visit. There can be many reasons that dogs or puppies might drink urine. This can happen if the puppy is very thirsty, either because there is no other water source available, or because he has a medical condition that makes him abnormally thirsty all the time. Certain illnesses like diabetes or a urinary tract infection can also make the urine smell or taste different, causing some dogs to want to lick or drink it. It can also be a strictly behavioral problem related to stress or anxiety, or an attention-seeking behavior. I would recommend taking your puppy to the vet for an exam to see if there is a medical reason for this behavior. The vet can do a urinalysis as well as blood work or other testing if needed to check for any problems that may be causing it.

How frustrating for you! It may be that Nox needs to be let out in the middle of the night to pee, and I would start getting up once in the night to let him out to see if that keeps him from urinating in his crate. If that doesn't help, it could be that he is suffering from separation anxiety and does not like being left alone at night. You can try keeping the crate in your room, or using DAP. This is a pheromone diffuser that helps dogs with anxiety, and you plug it in the room where he is kept. That may help calm him at night and keep him from urinating in his crate.

This is a very common problem with puppies :) It sounds like the pen he is in is probably too large - it gives him too much space to work with, and makes it easy for him to wake up and find a spot to pee, rather than either holding it or whining to let you know he needs to go out. Instead of the pen, I would recommend having him sleep in a crate in your bedroom at night. Most puppies instinctively do not want to pee where they are sleeping, so in most cases this means that the pup will whine to wake you up if he needs to go out during the night. As he gets older and his bladder control improves, he should start to be able to hold it all night with no problems.

Puppies can be so destructive! If he has decided that this is what he wants to do then he will likely continue. You may want to consider putting him in a crate at night, small enough that he doesn’t need a potty pad. At 3 months he should be able to hold his urine for 4-5 hours at a time, so taking him out once during the night would still be very normal right now.
