My puppy has a discolored tooth and gum abscess. What should I do?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 15 lbs

We hust got a puppy 3 days ago ( she is 8 weeks old) and i just noticed she has a discolored tooth and there is an abcess on the gums on top of the tooth. Should i worry about it or will her tooth fall out soon? Her vet appt is next week (about 7 days out.)

Congratulations on your new puppy! Teeth can appear discolored if there has been damage to the blood supply for the tooth or just before a baby tooth is about to fall out. If you feel there may be an abscess present i would recommend that you have her seen by your veterinarian sooner

Ouch! Tooth abscesses are very painful! I would recommend you take Sugar in sooner to have her mouth looked at. If there is an tooth abscess, she likely needs pain medication and antibiotics. The incisors are the first baby teeth to fall out while canine teeth fall out around 5-6 months of age. Depending on which tooth it is, it may be close to falling out or may need to be extracted under general anesthesia. Your vet should be able to further guide you as to how to proceed to resolve the issue based on the location of the tooth and how the infection looks.

Its not normal for the gums to become pigmented from losing teeth but if you are seeing it on both sides, I would not be suspicious of anything abnormal. Monitor for any signs of abscesses from the puppy teeth-usually this will look like a red bump. I hope this helps with little Buster!

My 4-month-old puppy has a brown tooth and red gum bump. Should I worry?

I would not be too concerned about the tooth at this time. It is difficult to tell from the picture, but the tooth in question looks as if it is a baby tooth that has broken off. If this is the case, the tooth will fall out sometime between 12-16 weeks of age. If this is an adult tooth, then I would recommend you continue to monitor it for now. If the tooth is still looking abnormal at the time of your dog’s spay (around 6 months of age) then your vet can remove it while she is already under anesthesia. My puppy's black, broken baby tooth has an abscess. Does it need pulling?

My puppy's tooth is pink. What does this mean for their dental health?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Judging from the pictures, it appears that the tooth may have been traumatized. This may or may not have compromised the health of the tooth. I would recommend a dental cleaning to remove any tartar and also to get x-rays done of that particular tooth to see if there is any evidence the tooth is broken below the gingiva or if there is disease of the pulp chamber of the tooth. Why are my 1-year-old dog's gums purple around a loose baby tooth?

It’s a little difficult to see where the baby tooth and where the adult tooth are in your picture, but I would be concerned that the gum tissue does look quite purple and swollen. Ivy is quite old to still have a baby tooth - it should have fallen out by 6 months - and it’s possible that the adult tooth has a problem from the baby tooth being in for too long. There’s no substitute for an in person exam and in this case I think you should have your vet take a look.

Why does my puppy have a dark spot on her tooth with no pain?

Thank you for posting pictures. (I know that is always a challenge with a puppy!) From the pictures, the brown area just appears to be particulate build up on the tooth. That particular tooth has 3 roots, so there is a depression between the roots that things can get stuck in. (One of my dogs always has problems there.) I would recommend using an infant toothbrush and pet toothpaste (my favorite is PetSmile (http://store.petsmileusa.com)) to brush her teeth and continue daily. I hope that was helpful!
