My puppy's black, broken baby tooth has an abscess. Does it need pulling?

Congratulations on your new puppy! Teeth can appear discolored if there has been damage to the blood supply for the tooth or just before a baby tooth is about to fall out. If you feel there may be an abscess present i would recommend that you have her seen by your veterinarian sooner

You will need to take your puppy to a veterinarian for an exam and possible extraction of the tooth. If the pulpa of the tooth is damaged your puppy will need antibiotics, as puppies can get a tetanus infection from a fractured tooth. Please take Onyx to a vet asap.

Hello! If the baby canine tooth came all the way out and the piece of tooth coming out is his new adult tooth- then no worries! If the baby tooth is broken and partially inside the gums, then I would recommend a vet check. Unfortunately, broken baby teeth are a known risk factor for puppies getting tetanus because of all the crazy things they put in their mouths. In this case, we recommend extracting the remaining piece of tooth to prevent this. If you were planning on having him neutered, you may be able to schedule the tooth removal and neutering during the same anesthetic event. I hope this is helpful. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the baby tooth that was knocked out came out intact, meaning the entire root is present then he should be fine. If the tooth was broken then it could abscess or affect the adult tooth. The loose one will fall out on its own as that is the normal progression. If you are planning to neuter him you can do it sooner and have the vet X-ray the broken tooth and remove it while he’s under. I hope this helps!

Poor Minnie. The black tooth is likely infected and the red gums indicate periodontal disease. She needs to go to your vet for a mouth exam and likely will need to have this area cleaned well and potentially have to have the tooth extracted. The vet may recommend dental x-rays for optimal care. Until you can get her in you can rinse her mouth with pet formulated mouth wash to help with the odor and cut down in the infection.
