Why does my puppy have a dark spot on her tooth with no pain?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for the pictures. The brown on the teeth is enamel hypoplasia. Enamel formation occurs around 2 weeks to 3 months of age. Anything like trauma, a fever, nutritional deficiencies, infection, metabolic abnormalities, toxins and parasites that occur in that window can cause enamel hypoplasia. Distemper viral infections and other Morbillivirus species infections are commonly recognized as causes. I hope this helps and have a great day!

I would not be too concerned about the tooth at this time. It is difficult to tell from the picture, but the tooth in question looks as if it is a baby tooth that has broken off. If this is the case, the tooth will fall out sometime between 12-16 weeks of age. If this is an adult tooth, then I would recommend you continue to monitor it for now. If the tooth is still looking abnormal at the time of your dog’s spay (around 6 months of age) then your vet can remove it while she is already under anesthesia. It looks like it could be her baby tooth, and if the tooth is turning brown, I'm worried about the viability of the tooth. If the pulp is exposed, this will also cause her pain. Have her seen by her vet in the morning to discuss removing this tooth as needed. I hope this helps!

That appears to be just some build up in a normal furrow in the 4th premolar tooth. This can occur with normal wear on the teeth. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. Judging from the pictures, it appears that the tooth may have been traumatized. This may or may not have compromised the health of the tooth. I would recommend a dental cleaning to remove any tartar and also to get x-rays done of that particular tooth to see if there is any evidence the tooth is broken below the gingiva or if there is disease of the pulp chamber of the tooth. The teeth look absolutely fine, the dark color in the middle is due to a small area in the tooth that is much deeper than the rest of the teeth, it can be rectify only via dental scale and polish but it will likely come back within weeks, anyway - nothing to worry about.

Good on you for brushing Cleo's teeth a couple of times a week! That is really awesome. Brushing the teeth is great, but there can still be tartar build up over time. Cleo could have also injured her tooth biting in something hard. I would have her seen by a vet for this tooth problem. She may benefit from a dental cleaning, scaling, and polishing, and the vet can examine the tooth to determine why it is brown and how best to treat it. I would have her seen by a vet this week.
