Could my tiny puppy's diarrhea be from new food or the 5-in-1 vaccine?

Could my puppies diarrhea be from change in food or the 5 in 1 shot I give her I don't want her to get sick she is so small.

Either one of these things can result in diarrhea. At less than eight weeks, Buttons really should not even be receiving a vaccine as of yet, as that is the age when it is licensed at a minimum. Dietary change should always be done over a gradual period, approximately one week. Diarrhea can also be called by GI parasites in puppies this young. I would bring in a fecal sample to your veterinarian to be looked at to verify if any of this is occurring. If so, a dewormer can be administered and rid Buttons of the nasty bugs. Regarding vaccination, if you are concerned about reactions to the shots just make sure that Buttons is never receiving more than one or two at a time. With larger dogs, I don't hesitate to do up to four at any given time, but with a tiny pup I won't give more than two. Hope this helps.

Great question! If the puppy is between four to six weeks of age, that's still too young for him to get his vaccines. He should be between six to eight weeks of age before he gets his vaccines. I would take him into the vet in two to three weeks to get the vaccines done. As for the diarrhea, he could have intestinal worms causing it, which is common in young puppies. He will need a deworming treatment for it. I recommend Panacur, it's a three day course of treatment you can get OTC at a pet store or your vet's office. He will need a second course of it two weeks after the first to kill all the worms. He should be dewormed every month after that until he is six months old, and then should be dewormed every three months thereafter. I hope this helps!

If a dog is going to suffer a vaccine reaction, it typically occurs the same day as the vaccination. So this is likely unrelated. He may be experiencing GI upset secondary to all the new treats. I would stop those for now. Being so young and small, he should see his veterinarian if symptoms persist. In the meantime, encourage him to eat and drink small amounts. My puppy has diarrhea after shots. Is it a vaccine reaction?

It could be a reaction. A dog can have vaccine reactions at any point in life. Reactions usually occur within 24-48 hours after vaccination. For the diarrhea, withhold food for 12-24 hours then feed a bland diet (plain, boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts until the stool is normal. Transition slowly to the regular diet. If t doesn't resolve, see your veterinarian. In the future, separate the vaccines to determine which vaccine caused the reaction. Your veterinarian can pretreat with an antihistamine to avoid reactions. Call your veterinarian and report the possible reaction.

My new puppy has diarrhea and won't eat after her first shots.

Poor Bailey. The diarrhea could be present for many reasons and it could be related to a vaccine reaction. Parasites, bacteria overgrowth, a change in diet or something more sinister like parvo are also possible. I recommend to play it safe and have Bailey examined today by the veterinarian. Taking a sample of feces for testing. Best of luck.

I'm sorry that Jorkey is having diarrhea. It is unlikely that the diarrhea is related to getting the vaccines. It is possible it is due to intestinal parasites or even the de-worming medication, if he received that on Saturday. Stress can also cause diarrhea, so if he was anxious or stressed about the visit, that could have contributed. I would recommend you take him back to your vet to have his diarrhea evaluated. He may need a temporary diet change, probiotics, and potentially an anti-inflammatory medication for his colon. He also may need to be checked for intestinal parasites and be de-wormed with a different medication. I hope he is feeling better very soon!

It's possible the change in food could be causing digestive upset. The best way to start transitioning to solids is to make a slurry of their regular milk replacer that they've already been on combined with a little bit of the puppy food. This helps make it easier to digest without being too big of a change and may help settle their stomachs. Checking for any parasites with a fecal exam and deworming may also help, however if the vomiting or diarrhea continues, a vet checkup to rule out anything more serious is best.

For this reason, I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. We can have diarrhea due to stress (of a move to new home) or diet changes, however in young dogs we also worry about intestinal parasites (both worms and Protozoa that aren't killed by deworming) and in some cases depending on vaccine status parvovirus. For this reason it is best to have your pup checked at the vet and bring a stool sample for them to test. Until then you can pick up a probiotic for dogs at the vet or pet store and try feeding plain cooked white rice and boiled shredded chicken breast for a day or two.
