My puppy has diarrhea for days. Should I take her to the vet?

My Bernese mountain dog puppy has been having diarrhea since Thursday. She has been having diarrhea off and on since Thursday. Last night she woke up every hour with diarrhea. She eats fine & plays with our other dog, but I’m nervous about this diarrhea

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lulu. I would recommend that she sees her veterinarian. You have given it long enough for the diarrhea to potentially resolve on its own. She will likely need fecal testing and a medication at this point. Being a puppy it is easy for her to become dehydrated from losing excess fluid in her stool. Offer her plenty of water. She may be experiencing intestinal parasites, a bacterial infection or overgrowth related to stress or a diet change. Other times a definite cause is not determined and supportive treatment is recommended. I hope this information helps!

I’m sorry Baby isn’t feeling well. I would recommend having a fecal examination done by a veterinarian to look for any signs of paralysis. She may also be eating a food that she doesn’t do well with. I would recommend discussing diet choices with your veterinarian as well. Young dogs also have a habit of chewing things up and eating things that can cause intestinal upset, so that is possible as well. In the meantime I would skip a meal to rest her stomach. Then start with a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice. I would feed the bland diet for several days until the stool is back to normal, then transition to the food that you and your veterinarian have decided is a good choice. It sounds like the brownie batter gave Chase the diarrhea. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 6 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is a good sign that Graham is otherwise feeling well. However, diarrhea in a puppy is concerning as it can be indicative if gastrointestinal infections such as parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal parasites or even dietary indiscretion. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment of this based on findings. The sooner these conditions are treated the better generally. At the very least they can start him on an anti-diarrhea medication. Good luck!

Poor pup! No, it's not normal for her to have diarrhea, especially if it's been going on for a week now. I would be concerned that she may have an intestinal parasite of some kind, or possibly an infection causing the diarrhea. I would recommend taking her to the vet today if you can for an exam - he/she can do a fecal exam to check for parasites or other problems, and will prescribe appropriate medication to treat the diarrhea depending on what is found.

Poor Morticia! The diarrhea could be due to many conditions including eating something she shouldn’t have, bacterial over growth, parasites or even organ disease. If the diarrhea has continued beyond 24 hours, I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. With continued diarrhea, there are often bacterial shifts in the gut that will make matters worse regardless of the initial cause. Make sure to bring in a sample of fresh stool. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth. Many times a bland diet can help and then a slow, gradual introduction to the normal food can be done. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. I hope Morticia starts feeling better quickly! If Kiki has mild diarrhea but is acting normal and has a good appetite, she may have ingested something she shouldn't have - puppies explore the world with their mouth, and sometimes they eat things that can upset their GI tracts! You can give her some bland food (white rice and lowfat cooked chicken) and see if it improves in the next day or two. Many mild cases of diarrhea are self-limiting and will resolve with bland food. If, however, the diarrhea is severe, or is accompanied by a decreased appetite or vomiting, or continues more than a couple days, Kiki should be seen by a vet. Diarrhea can be caused by many things including stress, diet changes, and infections, and your vet will be able to help differentiate what's going on and start her on medication if needed. My puppy has diarrhea for a week after eating soup. What should I do?

At this point, I don’t think it’s the soup. Common causes of persistent diarrhea in a puppy would be intestinal parasites, bacterial or viral infection, continued dietary indiscretion (meaning he keeps eating things he shouldn’t), or, less commonly, a food sensitivity to his current puppy food. Since this has lasted longer than 24 hours, I would recommend taking Sunny to the vet for evaluation. They can check a stool sample for parasites and evaluate his vaccination history to make sure there weren’t any gaps, then proceed with a recommended treatment.
