My dog has watery diarrhea after eating outside. Is it parasites?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Honey. Since the diarrhea has gone on for several days, I would recommend that she sees her veterinarian. She will likely need fecal testing and a medication to clear it up. As you mentioned, she could have acquired a parasite. She also could have ingested something that upset her stomach either on your walk, a scrap of human food or a new dog treat. When this occurs and diarrhea results, a secondary bacterial overgrowth can occur. This perpetuates the diarrhea and an antibiotic is usually necessary. If the testing does reveal a cause and the diarrhea recurs after treatment, then I would consider a diet change. In the meantime, offer her plenty of water so that she does not become dehydrated. Poor pup! Diarrhea with no obvious cause can definitely be frustrating. If no parasites were seen on her fecal exam and she's acting normal otherwise, then it may be a food allergy or intolerance issue - I have seen this a number of times in puppies with diarrhea who tested negative for all the usual suspects, but did very well with a diet change. You can try feeding her plain boiled chicken and white rice for the next 3-5 days to see if the diarrhea resolves - if so, then she may need to stay on a special, easily digestible diet such as Hills i/d or Royal Canin GI diet.

Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Daisy evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am sorry to hear about Jo! Being that she was from a shelter it is quite possible she has GI parasites, which could be worms or protozoa like Giardia or Coccidia. I would recommend bringing Jo and a stool sample in to the vet for an exam. In the meantime you can start a probiotic for dogs (available at pet stores and vet offices and online) which can sometimes help.

Diarrhea can be due to bacterial overgrowth in the colon, liver or pancreatic disease, or parasites that are not covered by a typical dewormer. If you are seeing blood you should definitely make an appointment to see a vet. They may want to check a stool sample or even check some blood work.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bambie. Deworming can resolve diarrhea when parasites are to blame. This is not always the case though. It is best a see a veterinarian for fecal testing to know why she is having loose stool. Then appropriate medication can be prescribed to help her feel better. I hope this information helps!
