My puppies have diarrhea and a possible bladder infection. Why?

Hi there. Good question. My first thought with both of them sick is a parasite, or a food sensitivity. Parasite being most probale. I would bring in a fecal sample from both of them to start. If that is negative, then it may need to have a fecal culture and PCR test done for the more rare bacteria and parasites. Make sure you aren't feeding any raw food, and until the testing is finished, Irecommend a bland diet of hills i/d food, or cooking boiled chicken and rice for 5-7 days

Inflammatory bowel disease is not common in a puppy but it could be dietary intolerance from something in the diet. Other potential causes include Giardia, bacterial overgrowth, or pancreatic insufficiency. Your veterinarian likely has a ‘next step’ already planned. I recommend to discuss Mable!s diarrhea with your veterinarian. They may want to try an antibiotic and a probiotic along with a bland diet to see if that resolves the diarrhea. They may also recommend protozoa testing, a fecal culture and/or pancreatic enzyme testing. A diet trial with a hydrolyzed protein is another potential option. Since there are many causes of diarrhea, each one needs to be worked through. I hope this helps and best of luck.

If the antibiotics didn't make much difference, I'd be suspicious of puppy vaginitis, which is a relatively common inflammatory condition that can lead to accidents and sometimes make them more susceptible to urinary infections. It generally resolves with age. I would also check for a stricture (this may require sedation as they don't love vaginal palpation...). For now, since your vet hasn't been able to check a urinalysis, that would be the first priority. See if you can get a sample- sneak a small container under her when she squats. If you have to hold onto the sample a few hours before dropping it at your vet, stick it in the fridge, but the fresher the better. If you're having no luck, your vet can collect a sterile sample via cystocentesis. Hope this helps.

I would also recommend initiating a bland diet of chicken and rice and adding in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora. Sometimes a second course of dewormer is needed or a different dewormer is needed for treatment. With parasites, inflammation can result leading to diarrhea and soft stool and sometimes a bland diet or sensitive stomach is needed short term. I hope this helps! Diarrhea can be the result of an intestinal infection, dietary indiscretion (eating something that upset her gastrointestinal tract), inflammation or even stress. Bloody urine is typically due to a bladder infection, bladder stones, a primary bleeding disorder or in rare cancers bladder cancer. The improvement in the diarrhea is likely due to the probiotics, or beneficial bacteria, in the Greek yogurt. You may want to consider adding in a veterinary probiotic supplement that is formulated for dogs and puppies. I would also recommend consulting with your veterinarian regarding the diarrhea. Diarrhea in puppies can become very serious very quickly. There are other causes for diarrhea in puppies as well, such as parasites and viral infections, which may require further treatment from your veterinarian. Your veterinarian will likely recommend performing fecal tests to rule out some of these other potential causes.

Oh my. Poor puppy. Female puppies are high risk for getting urinary tract infections and his causes frequent urination, foul smelling urine, and accidents in the home. This is likely what is going on with Hazel. She needs to be seen by your local vet for a urinalysis (urine test) and oral antibiotics if confirmed. She also sounds like she has an upper respiratory infection as well. Both issues can respond to the same antibiotic medication so schedule an appt with your local vet soon to get her the proper treatment.
