Is my puppy ready for daycare after his third shots and Bordetella?

Congratulations on your new puppy! Red can interact with other dogs when he has had all of core vaccines which include rabies, bordetella (kennel cough) and a combination distemper vaccine. His rabies vaccine can be given after he is 12 weeks old and he should receive at least three distemper vaccines (usually given at 6, 9, and 12 weeks). It usually takes 10-14 days before a reasonable level of protection is established. I would wait 2 weeks before I took him around dogs with an unknown vaccine history. He should be fine around dogs that have been properly vaccinated.

Kennel cough is very contagious and can be bacterial and/or viral. The bordetella vaccine can help shorten the course of disease if your dog is exposed, but does not prevent infection. With a deep cleaning and decontamination, the daycare facility should be able to eliminate it for now. Great job of them letting their customers know of the illness at their facility! I would wait at least a week to make sure they haven't had any more infected dogs.

For his own safety and the safety of other dogs, it would be best to wait until he has received his complete first year round of vaccines including the second parvovirus vaccine which usually is given at around 4-5 months of age though that depends on when they received the first set of vaccines. I would play with Mia in your yard, but I would not take her into any public places until she is fully vaccinated. She is still susceptible to catching highly contagious and deadly diseases like parvo and distemper until she receives that third round of vaccines. Her health is too important to risk, so try to wear her out in your yard only. Best of luck.

He can have his vaccinations 2-3 weeks apart, so you can ask your vet to do the 11 week vaccine 3-4 days earlier and then do the third vaccine the day before you travel. This should work. Your puppy will have good protection, but the full protection will not be until about two weeks after the last vaccine. Make sure he also has a bordetella vaccination before going to the boarding facility, preferably at the next to last vaccination date so he can make sufficient antibodies by the time he goes to boarding.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think that socialization is important at this age. There is a fine line between preventing disease and socialization. It is fine for Coco to play with healthy fully vaccinated adult dogs and puppies. No dog parks. She can be walked on side walks. I would always pick up the stool if you think that Coco may want to start eating stool. Teach her to "leave it" early on. Leash walk until you are sure she is trained and isn't going to eat her stool. Stool eating is behavioral and it is hard to go back and teach them not too. Much easier to never allow them to start.
