Why does my puppy cry during tug of war? Is it teething pain?

Phoenix is adorable! At five months of age, it is the time when his puppy teeth are falling out and his adult teeth will be growing in, so it could be that the tug of war is playing a part in these baby teeth being dislodged. That being said, you don't want anything to disrupt the growth of his adult teeth, so I would hold off on the tug of war for now. I'd also have him mouth checked by a vet just to make sure that the roots of the teeth have fallen out so that his adult teeth can grow in without problem. I hope this helps!

Jasper will be losing his baby teeth for about another 6 weeks (until he is 6 months old). His adult teeth are currently pushing out his baby teeth, so his gums are more sensitive and easier to bleed right now. If the bleeding continues after his adult teeth are all in, I would certainly recommend having your veterinarian examine his gums to make sure they are healthy. Good luck! I can’t be totally certain but the picture appears that the little front teeth (incisors) are adult teeth. But the canines are baby teeth. And by the looks of the little bulges, the adult canines will be erupting soon. Long story short, this was going to happen to this baby canine sooner or later anyway!. It does not hurt very much at all and will probably fall out completely (or he’ll swallow it) in the next day or so. There is no way you’d be able to knock out an adult canine with a rope toy. So carry on with your tug-o-war and don’t worry if a baby tooth here and there are casualties! Best wishes to you and Xavier!

Having said that, if he is whining from pain, this is likely due to his maturing teeth. You can try using teething toys which help them when their teeth feel uncomfortable. However, if they are loose that is usually indicative of an underlying dental issue so I would recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If Dozer is only 3 months old then it is very common for loose milk teeth to fall out during rough play. It should be absolutely fine as even if the tooth has broken the permanent tooth should push the fragment out when it erupts. You can have a look and feel the gum line, you shouldn't be able to see or feel any fragments where it has come from. If in doubt you would need to have your vet check for you.

Your dog is likely teething now, ie losing his deciduous teeth and getting his permanent teeth. So losing a tooth while play-biting is quite normal. If the tooth is ready to come out and bothering him, biting something will help remove it.
