My puppy has a slight cough. Is it okay to walk him outside now?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Luke. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. I worry that he might have an upper respiratory tract infection. This is common and results in a hacking cough. Affected dogs may bring up white foamy material. If so, he will be contagious to other dogs. His veterinarian may prescribe him medication to help him feel better. I hope this information helps!

If your puppy is coughing, but otherwise feels happy, is eating, playing and very active it could indeed be kennel cough, or lung worm infection or other lung infection. I suggest you take him to a vet for an exam, and since the coughing is excessive, the vet can prescribe an antitussive, antibiotics if needed and anti-inflammatory medication, if necessary.

Brady's cough could have a number of underlying causes, such as heart disease, a heavy parasite burden (some worms can migrate through the lungs), heartworm disease (highly unlikely due to Brady's age), tracheal sensitivity, kennel cough (still a possibility), among others. Since the cough has recurred, Brady should see his vet for a recheck exam and may need chest x-rays and a fecal exam to check for parasites. I hope he's feeling better soon!

Dogs who have been around other dogs who have kennel cough can develop the illness as it is contagious. It is also a self-limiting illness meaning that it will go away on its own in about 2 weeks time. If Angel is experiencing coughing at certain times like at night or during exercise this points more to a problem with the heart. There are of course other things that can cause coughing. While It does not sound as though you need to rush to the vet with Angel, It wouldn't hurt to have her examined by a veterinarian. If you notice the cough worsens, does not appear to be resolving, her behavior changes, she seems to tire quickly after exercise, etc. Angel should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. It is not normal for her to be coughing after playing but if she has a touch of kennel cough then that may be why she is coughing. I suggest you get her to your veterinarian for an exam to be on the safe side.

Congrats on your new puppy, but I'm sorry Kasha isn't doing well! Typically you would see coughing all the time with kennel cough, and an increase of the coughing after exercise. It certainly could be a heart problem if this coughing only occurs after running and he tires easily, but there is a chance it could be a mild case of kennel cough or a respiratory infection. Until you can get him into the vet, rest him as much as possible. Don't let him run around, keep him quiet, and make sure he keeps eating and drinking. If he appears congested, you can try putting him in a room with a humidifier or taking him into the bathroom with you when you take a shower. The steam may help with any congestion. Best of luck.

It sounds like Zoey may have an upper respiratory infection such as kennel cough. This is a very contagious disease and she may have picked it up while walking outside, or when sniffing another dog. This is usually a self-limiting disease and will go away by itself within 4 weeks. If she gets a purulent discharge (nose and/or eyes), has trouble breathing or coughs more than a couple of times a day, you need to take her to the vet for an exam, antibiotics and cough medicine.
