My puppy has a really bad cough. What are the causes and solutions?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Kano. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian as I am concerned that he has an upper respiratory tract infection. Since the coughing has not resolved on it's own, he may require a medication. In the meantime, encourage him to continue to eat and drink. I do not think the cough should prevent you from taking Luke outside. However, I would allow him to go outside to use the restroom but let him limit his own activity. If he has energy and wants to play that is fine but I would not take him on long runs/walks. I do recommend limiting where you take him until he is fully vaccinated. If he continues to cough and is not improving I would recommend taking him to a vet for a food exam. Young dogs can get kennel cough, upper respiratory infections, pneumonia, parasites and even allergies that can cause a cough. If at anytime Luke is not feeling well I would recommend taking him to a vet for a good exam. Hope Luke feels better soon

In a young dog like him, something like kennel cough needs to be considered. I recommend that you have Kingsley evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include thoracic radiographs and bloodwork. Treatment would be dependent on findings. If it is kennel cough often times it resolves with supportive care including antibiotics. Good luck and have a good night!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Canelo! It is possible that he has kennel cough which can be cause by either a bacterial or viral infection. It is contagious between dogs. The cough sounds loud and goose honking. A lot of the time it is worse when they are resting, Sometimes they cough and gag up white phlegm. Most of the time kennel cough is self limiting and resolves in 2 weeks. But in young puppies some Vets like to start antibiotics to prevent pneumonia. Other causes for a cough is collapsing trachea which can be genetic in Pomeranians but is usually worse with excitement. I'd schedule an appointment with your Vet to have him looked at. Good luck!

Affected dogs will typically have a gagging cough that may or may not bring up a white foamy material. They can sneeze and have eye or nose discharge. Some dogs are lethargic and will not eat as much. If his symptoms persist until tomorrow, he will need to see his veterinarian. If he is refusing to eat or drink, then I would have him seen today. Oh no, poor Ice! I'm sorry he's sick. This vomiting could be due to his respiratory infection if he's coughing a lot. I would have him seen by a vet for his symptoms. He may benefit from medications from the vet for his symptoms. If he's congested, you can put him in a room with a humidifier or take him into the bathroom with you when you take a shower. The steam from either may help temporarily with his congestion.
