My young puppy is constipated from milk. How can I help her now?

Make sure you are simulating her to poop. Puppies this young cannot defecate without this. (Rub the anus gently for 10-20 seconds with a warm wet cloth/paper towel.) This needs to be done before or after every feeding (about every 2 hours). If that is not working within 8 hours, you need to see a vet. Do NOT attempt an enema on a puppy this small. Also make sure you’re feeding the puppy mild replacer EXACTLY as directed on the can. Diluting it or feeding too little can cause problems. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Topani!

Because Rosie is such a young puppy, it's a good idea to take her into your vet to diagnose the cause of the constipation. You need to treat what's causing it to stop it from happening. She also might need an enema, which only Iike vet can do. In young puppies, heavy worm burdens are a common cause of it. You can get a worming tablet from your vet. I would take her to the vet in the morning. In the meantime, you can give her some canned pumpkin purée (not pumpkin pie filling) mixed in with her food. You can also feed her wet food to get more moisture into her system.

I don’t believe that this can be caused by the mothers milk. However, it could possibly be caused by GI parasites. You did not say if the puppies had been dewormed by the veterinarian. If not, you should speak to your veterinarian about obtaining deworming medications for the puppies and possibly also for the mom.

Thank you for the clarification. Puppies often get constipated when they are on formula. It is best to dilute the formula a bit more with water and usually that helps. You can also give the puppy a drop or two of mineral oil or olive oil (NO other types of oil) on her tongue. DO NOT force it down her throat. Only do it once, don't keep giving it to her. These things should help. If they don't, you may need to take her back to the vet for an enema.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Constipation can be a huge issue with bottle fed puppies and kittens. I recommend mixing 2 different types of puppy formulas together and adding extra water. Hopefully that will help. She will need to be seen by Friday by a Vet if she still hasn't pooped. Constipation can be a huge issue in puppies this young. I would also recommend early weaning, starting around 4 weeks. Good luck!

Hello. Wow, you really have your hands full, but all I can say is thank you for caring so much. As for this pup, if it is nursing, I would not be too concerned. The time to administer a enema is if the pup seems really uncomfortable. You can use 2-3 mls of warm water as needed. Were you supplementing the first week & now the puppies are nursing well from mom? If so, they may be just needing to adjust. Try to do as much stimulation as you can. Make sure the puppies have excellent footing as the more they move the more this will help to stimulate a BM. I like something like fake sheepskin. No, I would not recommend giving Foxy milk for constipation. Milk actually causes GI upset in dogs, so it will not help. You can try mixing in a tablespoon of canned pumpkin purée (not pumpkin pie filling) on with her food to see if that helps. If she's still constipated in 24-48 hours, then I would have her seen by a vet as she may need a laxative or enema. The vet can diagnose the cause of the constipation.
