My 3-week-old puppy is constipated. Is castor oil safe or what helps?

Hydration and exercise. Get him to drink some water or a water/unflavored PediaLyte mix. Walk him around the house or play for 20-30 minutes. You can also try stimulating elimination by using a warm, wet washcloth and circle the rectum gently. If he doesn't defecate, see your veterinarian.

I would only be concerned if Adonis continues to have large volumes of diarrhea. You could try feeding him a bland diet for the next 2-3 days as long as he doesn't have any food sensitivities or dietary restrictions if his stool stays soft. To make a bland diet at home you can mix 25% plain, boiled boneless skinless chicken breast with 75% cooked plain white rice. If Adonis has profuse watery diarrhea, if you see blood in his stool or his diarrhea has not resolved in 3 days you should see your vet.

Thank you for the clarification. Puppies often get constipated when they are on formula. It is best to dilute the formula a bit more with water and usually that helps. You can also give the puppy a drop or two of mineral oil or olive oil (NO other types of oil) on her tongue. DO NOT force it down her throat. Only do it once, don't keep giving it to her. These things should help. If they don't, you may need to take her back to the vet for an enema.

Because Rosie is such a young puppy, it's a good idea to take her into your vet to diagnose the cause of the constipation. You need to treat what's causing it to stop it from happening. She also might need an enema, which only Iike vet can do. In young puppies, heavy worm burdens are a common cause of it. You can get a worming tablet from your vet. I would take her to the vet in the morning. In the meantime, you can give her some canned pumpkin purée (not pumpkin pie filling) mixed in with her food. You can also feed her wet food to get more moisture into her system.

Make sure you are simulating her to poop. Puppies this young cannot defecate without this. (Rub the anus gently for 10-20 seconds with a warm wet cloth/paper towel.) This needs to be done before or after every feeding (about every 2 hours). If that is not working within 8 hours, you need to see a vet. Do NOT attempt an enema on a puppy this small. It is easier to add a small amount of karo syrup to the bottle to help. It will only take a 1/4 teaspoon a day. You do have to stimulate puppies by gently wiping the area to help them go with a warm clothe

Castor oil can be quite irritating and gut spasm is not helpful in such cases. Gentle lubricant laxative such as hair ball paste and frequent small meals can help encourage such items to pass but any colic, vomiting or constipation should be checked by your vet
