My puppy has cold symptoms and trouble breathing. Should I see a vet?

There are variety of causes of these symptoms, but the most common is an upper respiratory tract infection. It is more likely if he has recently been to the groomers, had a boarding stay or visited a dog park. However, these exposures are not necessary for him to acquire an infection. Just like a cold in people, it can be picked up just about anywhere. A neighbor dog could cough or sneeze near the fence. His veterinarian will examine him and determine if this is the cause of his symptoms. If so, antibiotics may be prescribed. In the meantime, keep him quiet as exercise will exacerbate the cough. If he seems congested, you can place him in the bathroom while the shower runs. Breathing the warm humid air may ease the cough. I hope this information helps!

If your pup is having a lot of trouble breathing and you are concerned he is in respiratory distress, then I would have him seen by a vet as soon as possible. It's always fine to have your dog checked out by a vet if you are very concerned. Otherwise, I'd wait the three days and see if he improves before taking him back into the vet. I am worried that Bella may have pneumonia - which is fluid or infection of her lungs and has the symptoms you describe of open mouth labored breathing - running nose and less active/ crying. If she is not feeding as usual, you should take her to the emergency vet nearest to your home very quickly. They will probably recommend giving her oxygen, antibiotics and they will xray her chest to see how severe the problem is. Best of luck with Bella, I hope she does ok.

The symptoms she is experiencing such as trying to clear her throat, may actually be a cough. Coughing and wheezing can be indicative of an upper respiratory infection. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If your puppy is not improving after being on medications for a week or is worsening, I would schedule a recheck with your vet. Sometimes switching to a different antibiotic may help. The particular antibiotic that your puppy is on may also cause growth defects, but this is rarely seen. I typically use Clavamox or doxycycline for Respiratory bugs in puppies. Another alternative treatment your vet might consider, is initiating nebulization therapy to help relieve some of the symptoms your puppy is experiencing. I would recommend bringing Pippa to a veterinarian especially if she is coughing and breathing hard. She may have an upper respiratory infection but could also be something more. Your veterinarian can listen to her to make sure her lungs are clear and if not can perform x-rays to make sure she doesn't have pneumonia or bronchitis.
