My puppy with coccidia is lethargic and peeing a lot after IV. Why?

If your dog does not start showing improvement after 48 hours of being on the medication and/or if his symptoms persist, then you should take him back to your veterinarian for a recheck. He may need additional diagnostics like blood work, X-rays, and/or a parvo test (depending on his vaccination status). He may also need supportive care like nausea medication and fluid therapy. Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would recommend bringing in another fecal sample to your vet to ensure that the coccidia have been killed. I would also recommend initiating a bland diet of chicken and rice and adding in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora. Sometimes a second course of dewormer is needed or a different dewormer is needed for treatment. With parasites, inflammation can result leading to diarrhea and soft stool and sometimes a bland diet or sensitive stomach is needed short term. I hope this helps! Hello, no these symptoms are not typical after finishing a course of treatment for coccidia. It's possible that Maverick has intestinal parasites such as roundworms that would not be treated with the coccidia medication. I would recommend having him seen sooner than Aug 11 if you're worried about him, or you could start by dropping off a fresh fecal sample for your vet to rule out other intestinal parasites and go from there. It always concerns me when young puppies get lethargic. Puppies are more susceptible to the effects of dehydration and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) than adult dogs, so diarrhea is more serious for Wallace than it would be for an adult dog. If he's back to acting normally, eating, drinking, and doesn't have further diarrhea or vomiting, it's perfectly fine to continue monitoring him at home. However, if he remains lethargic, has more mucousy diarrhea, begins to vomit, or refuses to eat or drink normal amounts, then you should have him examined by his vet. Your vet will need to do a physical exam. Depending on their suspicions based on their exam findings, they may recommend some diagnostic testing or may opt to start him on some medications. Possible causes of this type of issue include stomach upset from a virus, intestinal parasites, among many other issues. If your vet finds that Wallace is dehydrated, they'll also be able to give him some fluids. I hope that he feels better soon!

Us PetCoaches don't have access to your previously asked questions, so I am not quite sure what is going on with Cookie. Cotrimoxazole can cause GI upset and it may not be the best antibiotic for Cookie. Metronidazole is an good antibiotic for GI bacteria, but it can cause severe side effects if used in high doses over the day (I generally prescribe it for twice daily usage). Continued vomiting despite treatment means that there may be something else going on. Antinausea medications will help, but only if things like a GI obstruction have been completely ruled out. I would recommend you discuss the ongoing vomiting with your vet, or use a Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach Consult so that we can evaluate the entire case, diagnostics, and current treatments to help you decide what to try next with your vet.

I understand that it can be concerning when our four-legged friends' bowel habits change, but it is not concerning for a 3 month old puppy to go a day without pooping. If Marilyn had diarrhea prior to being diagnosed with coccidia, it would not be uncommon to go several days without a bowel movement. I can understand the concern that she may go in her crate, but if her crate is sized correctly (large enough to comfortably stand, turn around, and lay down, but without extra room), it is unlikely that she would go in there. Since she seems comfortable, playful, and is eating normally, there is likely no reason for concern. However, if she seems to be straining to poop unproductively, whining, stops eating, or becomes lethargic, Marilyn should go back to her vet for further evaluation. At this point, just keep taking her outside frequently, but don't stress if she doesn't go today! There isn't anything that will effectively make her go at home aside from frequent trips outside. Loss of appetite and lethargy can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. Not urinating can be a separate issue and could be due to an obstruction or just simply to a lack of drinking. I recommend that you have Harley evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam.
