My puppy's front legs hurt. Is it a serious carpal growth plate issue?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Japanese Spitz | Male | unneutered

Hi, What is the problem with closure of growth plate carpal point? Is that a serious problem with a puppy who born in Nov 2019? The veteran says that my puppy feels hurts when he bend the front legs and he suggest us to take a x-rays to see how is the situation. He is not too sure about it. So should I take the xRay as soon as possible? What if it is the closure of growth plate carpal point, what’s the normal treatment process? Thanks for your help. I really appreciate. Kind regards, Lu

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Pillow, Lu. Poor boy. Premature closure of the carpal growth plate leads to a shorted bone, which in turn leads to leg deformities and problems with walking. Yes you should definitely have x-rays done as soon as possible. If he does have this problem, surgery is done to correct it. I hope this helps!
