Camping with my puppy: Do I need extra flea & tick repellent?

Even though fleas and ticks need to bite a pet in order for Nexgard to work, it kills the parasites quickly enough to prevent them from causing either flea infestations or from transmitting different tick-borne diseases. However, no product is 100% effective. I think you're being very proactive in looking for repellant options to protect Milo on your upcoming camping trip! Topical products like K9 Advantix II (available over the counter) or Vectra 3D (prescription-based), or Seresto collars (available over the counter) are all labeled to repel new ticks and Advantix II also repels mosquitoes. To my knowledge, no products actually repel fleas. Don't worry - they all kill fleas quickly, so an infestation isn't a concern. I often recommend using any one of these products in conjunction with Nexgard if a high-risk situation is needed. However, since I don't know Milo's medical history, I strongly recommend first calling his vet to confirm that it's safe for him to use one of these products. There are no proven safe or effective home remedies to prevent fleas and ticks in dogs. Since ticks (and even fleas) can carry some nasty disease, Pudgy definitely needs protection! I love Seresto collars for their protection. Advantix or Frontline Plus are topicals that you can get over the counter, but in my opinion they do not prevent fleas as well as Seresto collars or prescription oral preventatives. Even with protection, you should still check Pudgy every night for attached ticks - don't forget folds around the ears or toes! Pudgy will probably be okay for the trip without being current on vaccines, but I think he should have them updated as soon as you get back if he wasn't done with his recommended series. Just make sure he isn't around other unvaccinated dogs.

Great question! For fleas, ticks, and mosquito repellency, K9 Advantix would probably be your best bet. You can certainly use a small amount of Vaseline or Bag Balm on her paw pads to help protect them from drying out, if you wish.

It is a flea and tick prevention, but also repels mosquitoes which aids in heartworm prevention. It provides protection against certain types of biting flies, lice and mites. Nexgard is the only oral flea and tick preventative approved in the US for 6 months or younger. I would continue the Nemex every 2 weeks until they start heartworm prevention. I hope this helps!

You can just go and buy tick and flea treatment for your dog. Make sure it is the right size for his weight. You should think about heart worm treatment also. This will require a heart worm test to make sure he does not have heart worm and then the vet can prescribe the heart worm prevention. It is typically ok to space out flea/tick prevention by 2 weeks time span. I would recommend waiting the entire 14 days before using the Nexgard. The bath likely didn't strip any of the product off. If you do happen to see fleas on Dexter before the 14 day mark, you can safely give him a Capstar tablet (from your local pet store) which can rid the fleas off of him within 1 hr, but is not considered to be a flea preventative.
