Best flea/tick/mosquito prevention & paw protection for dog hike?

For days where it is very hot, you do want to avoid taking your dog for a walk at the hottest parts of the day (mid-day) especially on paved areas as your dog's feet can get burned. I typically recommend Vectra 3D. It covers fleas, ticks, mosquitos, biting flies, lice and some mites. I like it as it can repel these pests. So your dog doesn't have to be bit for the medication to work. This helps to prevent the spread of disease. Vectra 3D also adds another layer of protection against heartworm disease by repelling mosquitos. It can be applied in additional to oral heartworm prevention.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! be sure that Toby is on heart worm prevention which is a parasitic disease from mosquito's. If he hasn't been on prevention he should be tested and started. There are a few products that are license to repel mosquito's: Vectra 3D, K9 Advantix II and Biospot. You can try to rub some Avon Skin So soft on his face (avoid eyes and moth) before letting him out at dusk. I wish you the best!

Great questions! There are no medications that covers mosquitos or flea eggs, but dogs can be protected from heartworm by Heartgard (heartworm is transferred via mosquitos). As for flea eggs, flea medications will kill fleas to prevent them from laying flea eggs, but you should disinfect the environment if Pumpkin has fleas. I personally highly recommend Revolution. It kills fleas, ear mites, and roundworms. I hope this helps :-)

Even though fleas and ticks need to bite a pet in order for Nexgard to work, it kills the parasites quickly enough to prevent them from causing either flea infestations or from transmitting different tick-borne diseases. However, no product is 100% effective. I think you're being very proactive in looking for repellant options to protect Milo on your upcoming camping trip! Topical products like K9 Advantix II (available over the counter) or Vectra 3D (prescription-based), or Seresto collars (available over the counter) are all labeled to repel new ticks and Advantix II also repels mosquitoes. To my knowledge, no products actually repel fleas. Don't worry - they all kill fleas quickly, so an infestation isn't a concern. I often recommend using any one of these products in conjunction with Nexgard if a high-risk situation is needed. However, since I don't know Milo's medical history, I strongly recommend first calling his vet to confirm that it's safe for him to use one of these products. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Buddy. I prefer to use a topical liquid for flea and tick prevention. The reasoning being this will prevent the spread of disease from ticks. All oral products require the patient to actually be bitten by the tick for the prevention to work. The bite is how tick born diseases are spread. My favorite product is Vectra 3D. It also repels mosquitoes so it works in conjunction with your dog's monthly heartworm prevention. This is a huge benefit. It is also effective against lice, certain types of mites and biting flies. Unfortunately, natural products are not going to effective. The diseases spread by ectoparasites can be a serious threat to your pet. A lot of times there are manufacturer rebates available when you purchase Vectra 3D. I hope this information helps!
