My puppy has a broken leg. How do I make her more comfortable?

I would suspect that Bambino's whimpering and crying is due to pain. A fractured leg would be very painful, and he is on pain medication to help with that pain. Be sure to give it as directed, and if you feel that maybe it's not helping, discuss with his vet possibly using another pain medication for him. Best of luck, I hope this helps.

It is fine to use the tramadol as prescribed at the time of her spay but I recommend that you call your Vet first and describe the symptoms that Brooklyn is having. They may want to see her first to determine why she is still painful this far out from surgery. I hope this helps and I wish you both the best.

Hello. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Sorry Lupa had to have an amputation but it sounds like she is doing great! I think you should give the Trazodone. We actually often prescribe it just for this purpose - to keep dogs calm and quiet post-operatively. It is really best for her to be as inactive as possible for at least the next 7-10 days. Go ahead and give her the Trazodone tonight and then call your vet and consult with them tomorrow about how to proceed. Since I don't have Lupa's entire medical history, etc. I cannot really tell you to keep giving it or what dosage to give. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hi and thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach about Gaby. I am so sorry to hear that she got hurt. Since Gaby's pain level has not significantly improved on the medications she has at home I am just as concerned as you are. You did not mention the exact medications that she is on but I am wondering if an additional medication may help her. If Gaby had any sort of neck/back pain during her trauma, it may help her to add a muscle relaxant to her treatment regimen (methocarbamol/robaxin). You should give your veterinarian a call right away to see if this would be an appropriate addition to her current treatments. You mention trouble walking and this is concerning for either primary neurological or orthopedic problem related to her fall. Even though xrays did not reveal a fracture, there are many problems that may still not have shown up (herniated disc, pinched spinal nerve). Sometimes the pain from these types of falls is bad enough that these older dogs need to be in the hospital on IV pain control to get them feeling better. I would highly recommend to consult with your veterinarian and assess if Gaby's pain is bad enough to warrant treatment in the hospital or just possibly try an additional medication at this time. In the meantime please restrict her exercise and movement to a bare minimum so that she does not further injure herself. Best of luck to your sweet Gaby.

Poor Raven! I'm sorry to hear that she was hit by a car. It's good that she's already been seen by a vet, and it sounds like she's on a few different medications to help control her pain level and keep her as comfortable as possible. It's not surprising that she's sore, given that she suffered a serious trauma recently. It's fine to let her just go to the bathroom where she is laying for now - you can put potty pads or towels underneath her, and just change them when they get wet or soiled. She'll likely be more comfortable if she stays quiet and still rather than trying to walk outside. I would not recommend giving any kind of human OTC medication, as she's on several different meds for pain already and this would not be safe to do. If you still think she seems overly painful tomorrow morning, you can call your veterinarian to ask about adding in another prescription medication such as tramadol, and/or increasing the dose on some of her other meds. Your vet can advise you on safe dosages based on her condition and her overall treatment plan.

Sadly, we cannot give out drug dosages online. Sorry! I would recommend calling your veterinarian as they can prescribe this for you. Given the fall, however, an exam would be worthwhile. There are places on the jaw that can fracture, and this would need to be repaired ASAP. Poor girl!

Based off the radiograph, it looks like her fibula, the smaller bone in her lower leg, may be fractured. It is difficult to know for sure without an orthogonal view, but that may be the reason for her limping. I recommend restricting her activity to cage rest and leash walks only, do not let her run or play for at least 4 weeks to allow time for the bone to heal. I recommend having her evaluated by a veterinarian who can perform bloodwork and see if it is safe to prescribe her anti-inflammatory pain medications to help her feel more comfortable. NEVER give human pain medications to dogs as they can be markedly toxic. I hope this is helpful!
