Why is my 6-month-old spayed puppy breathing fast, mouth closed?

Breathing at an erratic rate while asleep may simply be an indication of active dreaming. As long as her breathing does not appear labored and as long as she is not having any other indications of illness, I would not worry too much about her health. Continue to monitor for any significant changes to her health, monitor her surgical site for any signs of infection or discharge (serous / clear discharge in small amounts is normal), and keep a close eye on her energy level. If all of these seem to check out, I don't think you have anything to be concerned about at this time.

I would recommend that you have Rousey checked out by a vet. Breathing that quickly is not normal. While sleeping, she should breathe less than 20 times in a minute. Increased respiratory rate at night could indicate heart or lung disease, anemia, or pneumonia. If she has fractured ribs, she could benefit from pain medications. She should probably also be checked for intestinal parasites, which are easily picked up while hanging out on the streets.

Hello. If Bella's breathing appears normal when she sleeps, then this is not too concerning, but it would not hurt to have her evaluated just to be sure. She is too young for most chronic conditions, but if she is not on any heartworm preventative, this would be a good thing to check on. I am worried that Bella may have pneumonia - which is fluid or infection of her lungs and has the symptoms you describe of open mouth labored breathing - running nose and less active/ crying. If she is not feeding as usual, you should take her to the emergency vet nearest to your home very quickly. They will probably recommend giving her oxygen, antibiotics and they will xray her chest to see how severe the problem is. Best of luck with Bella, I hope she does ok.

52 breaths per minute is considered tachypneic and points to some breathing problem such as an upper respiratory or pulmonary congestion or a heart condition. The fact that this is even worse when she is resting is also pointing to a possible heart condition. I suggest you schedule an exam with your veterinarian for an exam.

I would recommend that you have Bella examined by a vet as soon as possible. Open mouth breathing in a dog that is in a cool, comfortable environment can be caused by heart disease, lung disease, anemia, severe pain, among a few others. Rapid heart rate can also be caused by these things. When you get to the vet, they will do a physical exam and may recommend x-rays to make a diagnosis.

I agree that this is a pretty rapid respiratory rate for Daisy, particularly if she's resting while breathing this quickly. As you mentioned, it's very possible that this fast breathing is due to post-operative pain. However, if she's currently receiving pain medication after surgery, it's a bit less likely. Other causes of rapid breathing can include stress or anxiety, blood clots in the lungs, heart disease, pneumonia, among others. Regardless, it would be best to take Daisy to the vet urgently for evaluation. If the vet suspects pain as the cause, they will be able to prescribe additional pain medications. Otherwise, they will be able to perform any necessary diagnostic testing, which may include chest x-rays or blood clotting times to try to get to the bottom of this issue.
