My puppy has bloody diarrhea and pain. Is a vet visit urgent?

Bright red blood in the stool is typically due to inflammation in the colon. This can be due to parasites, but there are other causes as well. This bleeding allows intestinal bacteria access to the bloodstream. This can have serious consequences. For this reason, she may require an antibiotic in addition to deworming treatment based on results of fecal testing. I hope this information helps!

This blood in his diarrhea could be due to intestinal worms, eating something rotten, a foreign body, parvo if he isn't vaccinated, or a severe stomach illness. He should definitely see a vet for this. As long as he is otherwise ok, it can wait until the morning. If he starts vomiting, has more bloody diarrhea, is very lethargic, stops drinking water, or is vomiting water, take him into an ER vet immediately. I hope this helps!

I am sorry to hear about your dog! Since she has been having diarrhea for 5 days now and it seems to be worsening I would recommend bringing her in to the vet for an exam. She could be suffering from colitis as a result of her ingestion (the most likely cause) or it could be unrelated. She likely needs some medication to help decrease inflammation in the GI tract (most commonly we use a drug called Metronidazole) and often we will also prescribe probiotics, antidiarrheal medications, and special diets in these cases. In some cases pets may become dehydrated from ongoing diarrhea and require fluids to rehydrate them.

Withhold food for 6 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If you continue to see blood in her poop, she starts having diarrhea, it continues to be painful for her to poop, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.
