My dog has bloody diarrhea after eating candy. Does she need a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Hi. Friday my dog ate about a dozen wrapped Hershey’s candy cane kisses, (white chocolate) since then she’s had horrible mucas like diarrhea. Today, Tuesday, there was some blood in it. Not a lot, not bright red or black/Red, just...Red. She’s pooped out all the wrappers, but now I’m really worried. She’s eating/drinking and acting normal and doesn’t appear to be in any discomfort. At this point, do I need to take her for an exam or give it another day or two on the bland diet? 12 yr old F Pitt.

I am sorry to hear about your dog! Since she has been having diarrhea for 5 days now and it seems to be worsening I would recommend bringing her in to the vet for an exam. She could be suffering from colitis as a result of her ingestion (the most likely cause) or it could be unrelated. She likely needs some medication to help decrease inflammation in the GI tract (most commonly we use a drug called Metronidazole) and often we will also prescribe probiotics, antidiarrheal medications, and special diets in these cases. In some cases pets may become dehydrated from ongoing diarrhea and require fluids to rehydrate them.
