My puppy's belly is big. Is this normal, or am I feeding her too much?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is likely normal but I would feed less formula at each feeding and increase the frequency or number of feedings. That way he is getting smaller amounts and his stomach won't get so distended. Be sure to contact your Vet for a deworming protocol soon. I also suggest weaning bottle fed puppies sooner due to the constipation or diarrhea affects of formula. Have a good day!

My first comment is that if Mocca has not been dewormed yet, I would do so because worms can cause a bloated abdomen and abdominal discomfort. If that’s already been taken care of, then yes, I agree she looks a bit full. Some puppies will eat everything you give them, even if it’s more than they really need. Beagles are a breed that are known for this. As such, I’d say just decrease your amount. Aim for the middle of that recommendation- about 145gm per day or about 45-50 gm per feeding. If that is still too much for her, drop to about 35 Gm per feeding. If she is not gaining weight or is looking too thin on these smaller amounts, your vet will likely just recommend feeding the small amount 4 times daily instead of 3 times daily. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Ozzy is so cute! One thing that comes to mind right away is if any dewormings have been performed. Puppies get infected with intestinal parasites from their mother before birth and while nursing. Deworming of puppies should be done as early as 2 weeks of age and should be done every 3 weeks for at least 3-4 dewormings. This is usually why puppies have pot bellies. I hope this helps. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Puppies should be dewormed every 2 weeks from 2 weeks of age to about 10 weeks of age. She can still have worms. But in general puppies of Bella's age tend to have fat little distended bellies, just like human babies, which is very normal. They tend to look even fuller after eating. In this case, the belly all of the sudden gets big, about 20-40 minutes after eating. As long as your Ziggy is comfortable, not crying and his energy level is normal you just need to monitor him at home. The mild bloat should get better in 4-6 hrs time. Chronic abdominal distention in puppies in most cases is related to gastrointestinal worms. If Ziggy has not been de-wormed yet, please do it as soon as possible. You can buy worming medications at the vets but also in pet shops and online - you can get them over-the-counter.
