Puppy bled after first erection. Is it normal? Should I neuter?

I see that your dog is not neutered - I'm not sure how old he is, but in middle-aged or older unneutered males it is common to see blood dripping from the penis as a symptom of an [enlarged prostate](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/prostate-enlargement/). That is normally the first thing that I would check out in a dog with this problem. Other possible causes include an injury or tumor on the penis or the penile sheath, a bladder or prostate infection, bladder stones, kidney disease, or even a systemic bleeding disorder. I would recommend taking him to a vet for an exam - they will probably want to collect a urine sample for testing, check his prostate during a rectal exam, and examine his penis closely outside the sheath to look for any problems. From there, x-rays and ultrasound can be used to look at the prostate, if needed. If the problem is due to prostatic enlargement, this can normally be improved with [neutering](https://www.petcoach.co/article/benefits-of-neutering-castrating-male-dogs-puppies/) and does not typically cause any long-term problems.

Most intact males will get erections from time to time, and this can cause inadvertent trauma to the penis due to pure friction against the penile sheath. Unfortunately the only way to stop this is to either lube the pets penile sheath daily to hopefully help reduce this friction, or to have the pet neutered. But keep in mind it can take up 2 months post-neuter for the testosterone levels to decrease enough to cause a reduction in unwanted sexual behavior. For now, if the bleeding has stopped, then you can try applying a cold compress onto the penile sheath for 5-10 minutes to help alleviate some of the irritation, and apply some KY jelly. However if there is significant swelling then it is best to get Teddy seen by your vet to get him on pet friendly anti-inflammatory medications. Then you can discuss possibly neutering Teddy to avoid this in the future.

It's a little difficult to tell for sure, but I wonder if Charlie had a persistent penile frenulum. It is a band of tissue that runs along the underside of the penis and attaches near the tip of the penis. That will cause the penis to curve. Normally we recommend surgically cutting the frenulum. I have not had one rupture on its own. They do not typically reattach after surgically cutting them. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine it to make sure that it was a persistent penile frenulum and see if anything else needs to be done about it. In the meantime, I would recommend trying to keep Charlie from licking at it and prevent any humping. If you are unable to stop the bleeding, then he may need to be examined tonight. Good luck! It would not be typical to see bleeding from the penis following a neuter surgery. I would actually worry that Henry might have a wound on his penis or even a urethral prolapse. If you see any more blood I would recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian. Either of these problems could get worse if not treated promptly.

If Thor has not had any abdominal x-rays or an abdominal ultrasound performed I would definitely recommend having these tests performed to figure out why there is blood dripping from his penis. I would also recommend a trial of an antibiotic and an antiinflammatory to see if this resolves with symptomatic treatment. I can understand being concerned about Ruger! He could have sustained trauma to his penis, or he could be suffering from a UTI or bladder stones. As long he's not bleeding heavily and is acting normally, you can bring him into the vet in the morning. The vet can diagnose the cause of the bleeding so Ruger can be treated.

This can wait until Monday morning unless the dog looks in severe discomfort from this. if this is not a young dog then a Prostate disease is very likely (cancer or infection), this definitely needs to be treated ASAP but it is not always an emergency.
