Why is my neutered male dog bleeding from his penis but acting normal?

I see that your dog is not neutered - I'm not sure how old he is, but in middle-aged or older unneutered males it is common to see blood dripping from the penis as a symptom of an [enlarged prostate](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/prostate-enlargement/). That is normally the first thing that I would check out in a dog with this problem. Other possible causes include an injury or tumor on the penis or the penile sheath, a bladder or prostate infection, bladder stones, kidney disease, or even a systemic bleeding disorder. I would recommend taking him to a vet for an exam - they will probably want to collect a urine sample for testing, check his prostate during a rectal exam, and examine his penis closely outside the sheath to look for any problems. From there, x-rays and ultrasound can be used to look at the prostate, if needed. If the problem is due to prostatic enlargement, this can normally be improved with [neutering](https://www.petcoach.co/article/benefits-of-neutering-castrating-male-dogs-puppies/) and does not typically cause any long-term problems.

It would not be typical to see bleeding from the penis following a neuter surgery. I would actually worry that Henry might have a wound on his penis or even a urethral prolapse. If you see any more blood I would recommend seeing an emergency veterinarian. Either of these problems could get worse if not treated promptly.

It sounds like Tyson was masturbating, which neutered dogs can do and is normal. But it sounds like he was a bit vigorous doing it, leading to him injuring his penis and blood. Blood from the penis can be a result of a urinarh tract infection, prostate issue, bladder stones, or trauma. I recommend having Nemo examined by a veterinarian and having a urine sample checked to see if an infection is present. He may need X-rays to rule out a bladder stone. It would be best to have him examined as soon as possible as these issues can progress quickly. He may need a prescription medication like an antibiotic to treat the underlying issue. Hello, sorry to hear about Oscar. He could have an infection of his prepuce or penis. Additionally, he could have a UTI or urinary stones. Ideally, he should be examined by his veterinarian so that they can evaluate his penis, prepuce and look for evidence of stones or a UTI. Look for straining to urinate, persistent blood in urine, and leaking urine. If you note any of these, then have Oscar evaluated sooner. Hope this helps and best of luck.

As long as his penis went back to normal and you are not seeing him drip any more blood you don't need to do anything. I would not get worried about one incident. That being said, once they start doing this, especially at his age, it can become a life-long problem so I suggest you have him neutered. Then you would not have to worry about prostate issues, persistent erections, etc. The blood dripped out because it pooled in the urethra because of the erection or he injured his os penis (bone inside the penis). It is definitely not an infection so don't worry about that. Just keep monitoring him and consider neutering.

This can wait until Monday morning unless the dog looks in severe discomfort from this. if this is not a young dog then a Prostate disease is very likely (cancer or infection), this definitely needs to be treated ASAP but it is not always an emergency.
