Is my puppy's biting and aggression due to pent-up energy?

Hello! As a Samoyed, Albert is a high energy puppy - so I suspect you're probably seeing normal playful puppy behavior. Even if his basic needs to eat, sleep, and urinate/defecate have been met, he still has significant needs to play and release energy! He is probably trying to engage you in play, so make sure you're giving him enough outlets for his excessive puppy energy. Good walks, throw toys for him to chase, play sessions with other (healthy & vaccinated) dogs, etc. Try to tire him out! If you feel he is showing truly aggressive behavior, then this is a conversation you should definitely have with your vet, as it would be quite alarming to see true aggression in a puppy his age. It certainly does happen, but is thankfully uncommon. However, if it's causing a problem it's better to address the behaviors with professional guidance as soon as possible. Hope this helps!

Yes, it is possible for sure! This behavior is typically puppy play but can sometimes be outright aggression. I would recommend turning Austin over on his back whenever he becomes aggressive / misbehaves and hold him on his back until he calms down. You can also use a spray bottle filled with water and spray him in the face whenever he acts up. Provide him with plenty of toys to interact with and exercise him lots and this will help as well. This is a serious and potentially dangerous situation and I recommend you enroll in some behavioral/socialization classes in order to create some positive behavior patterns. I do not recommend any rough play at this stage and only use exercise and toys which do not create such heightened excitement - do not encourage any tug games or chasing of ropes/toys in hand or of your own hands/feet shoes under any circumstances as this blurs the lines of acceptable behavior and biting/chasing behavior. Ensure he is receiving adequate physical and mental stimulation daily in order to fully engage body and mind

Congratulations on your new puppy! It takes some time for puppies to learn to mind their manners. I recommend making sure that Percy has plenty of toys to chew on as his adult teeth are coming in. As you are playing with Percy and he starts biting, you should stop playing and tell Percy "no" and only begin paying attention to him again once he is calm. Most puppies go through a stage where they become very mouthy and try and bite everything. This is a very different situation to an aggressive dog that is not being playful but is trying to inflict damage. I assume your dog is just being mouthy but if it is aggressive then you should contact a professional behaviourist asap. Mouthy puppies are best handled with consistency. When the pup bites firmly say no and put it on the floor and ignore it for a minute or 2. Resume play and repeat when the pup bites. Give the puppy plenty of toys which it can bite but never encourage it to see your hand as a toy.

This can be very common behavior for young puppies. It is important that you initiate training with your dog now so that his aggressive tendencies do not continue into adulthood. Somethings you can do to discourage his nipping and aggressive behavior are to try and redirect his aggression by giving him a toy to play with and bite on instead of using your hands and fingers. Also, when he missed behaves firmly tell him no, put him down and walk away and ignore him for 2 to 3 minutes. After that time you can start playing with him again and if his bad behavior returns ignore him again. If you continue to do this he will quickly learn that when he misbehaves you will not pay attention to him so he should stop the bad behavior. It would also be beneficial to start training him with basic commands like sit, stay, and come. This will help establish your role as the dominant one in the relationship. Also be sure he is getting plenty of exercise by taking him on 20 to 30 minute fast-paced walks at least 2 to 3 times a day. Unfortunately it's impossible for me to tell without observing the behavior. Canine aggression is a complex behavior as it can stem from dominance, possessiveness, fear, anxiety, resource guarding or a combination. Unless you are very familiar with reading canine body language and training, I recommend to work with a professional trainer.
