My puppy is barking and jumping. Is it aggression or just play?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Samoyed | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 25 days old | 13 lbs

Although I do not provoke my dog in any way, at times, my otherwise always gentle dog suddenly gets aggressive (barking at me, jumping on me), even though he has excreted waste, eaten and slept. Why do you think this is, and what can I do to solve it? Thanks in advance!

Hello! As a Samoyed, Albert is a high energy puppy - so I suspect you're probably seeing normal playful puppy behavior. Even if his basic needs to eat, sleep, and urinate/defecate have been met, he still has significant needs to play and release energy! He is probably trying to engage you in play, so make sure you're giving him enough outlets for his excessive puppy energy. Good walks, throw toys for him to chase, play sessions with other (healthy & vaccinated) dogs, etc. Try to tire him out!

If you feel he is showing truly aggressive behavior, then this is a conversation you should definitely have with your vet, as it would be quite alarming to see true aggression in a puppy his age. It certainly does happen, but is thankfully uncommon. However, if it's causing a problem it's better to address the behaviors with professional guidance as soon as possible. Hope this helps!
