My puppy bit me! Rabies shot needed? Is GSD puppy biting normal?

I am sorry to hear about your concern for your puppy. The answer to this question will depend on the circumstances. If this is a puppy you do not know/a stray/from an uknown home then I would recommend contacting your human physician. If this is your puppy who has been in your care with no exposure to wildlife and who is acting normally/healthy then the concern for rabies is very low but it does look like there is a puncture in your skin so I would recommend consulting your human doctor as we can develop bacterial infections due to dog bites and your doctor can advise you if treatment is necessary.

Rabies is transferred via bites, but given there was no bleeding when Mercy bit you, he likely didn't bite you deep enough to cause a risk. In addition, if he did have rabies, you would see signs of it (check out this link below for rabies signs in dogs), and if you don't see any signs of it then he doesn't have it. But you should contact your local health department and talk to a human physician. If Austin has Rabies in the transmissible form (in the salivary glands) then he will show neurologic signs for rabies with in 10 days. Keep him quarantined for 10 days. If he dies from any cause he should be tested for Rabies if it is before the 10 days quarantine. Always keep your pets up to date on rabies and prevent them interacting with wild life and unvaccinated pets. I wish you the best!

Hello, it is generally recommended that puppies receive their rabies vaccine at 16 weeks of age. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that a rabies vaccine should be given no sooner than at 3 months of age. Regardless of the time given initially, your dog should have another vaccine at 1 year of age. Look for any evidence of hives, swollen face, or lethargy as these may indicate a vaccine reactions. Your dog will be considered to be protected against rabies 28 days after administration of the vaccines. Hope this helps and best of luck.

It is unlikely that your puppy has rabies, however there are three things you need to do: 1) do not play with your puppy with your face close to it. 2) have your puppy vaccinated ( it will need at least three courses of vaccines to protect it from parvo. distemper and other viral diseases, as well as rabies 3) see a doctor for your lip injury.

Tetanus and rabies vaccinations are good - glad you got that but you also need antibiotics. The wound sounds infected. Dogs have dirty mouths with a lot of bacteria. I suggest you go to the doctor and get some antibiotics. You are not getting rabies so don't be worried about that.

Getting antibodies from the mother's milk is not enough protection. If the puppy has been indoors and not bitten by an unvaccinated animal it is VERY unlikely that it has Rabies. IF Dachie has Rabies he will die or show symptoms with in 10 days, if that happens you should seek immediate rabies treatment. You should be fine to wait the 10 days. Isolate and quarantine the puppy. It is good you have had the Rabies vaccine and you are likely protected but everyone's immune system is different. If you were bitten by a rabid animal you would be treated regardless of your own vaccine history but it is less involved. Have all your dogs Rabies vaccinated when age appropriate.
