Why does my puppy bark after I tell him no when he bites me?

Most puppies go through a stage where they become very mouthy and try and bite everything. This is a very different situation to an aggressive dog that is not being playful but is trying to inflict damage. I assume your dog is just being mouthy but if it is aggressive then you should contact a professional behaviourist asap. Mouthy puppies are best handled with consistency. When the pup bites firmly say no and put it on the floor and ignore it for a minute or 2. Resume play and repeat when the pup bites. Give the puppy plenty of toys which it can bite but never encourage it to see your hand as a toy.

I am so sorry that you are experiencing these problems with biting with Olie. I am sure it is very upsetting for you. First of all rest assured that this is a very normal puppy behaviour. Puppies learn through play biting and it is part of our role as pet parents to help them learn limits. I would not attempt negative reinforcement such as striking Olie or speaking harshly as this will potentially create more serious behaviour issues such as anxiety and fear-aggression. Try some calm corrections and positive reinforcement. If Olie bites you, simply say in a calm voice "no" and stop interacting with her for a few moments. This over time will teach him that biting is not a desired form of play. Also try reinforcing him as he starts to play in a good way by not biting, and give him a small training treat. If Olie does manage to bite hard enough to break the skin be careful of a possible infection. Monitor your wound for heat. Swelling, or discharge. Make an appointment with your doctor if this occurs. If you are struggling with the biting after a couple of weeks of the above suggested training methods, consider puppy socialisation classes or potentially a few sessions with a behaviourist. Other games which may be fun with Olie to redirect him in he is biting too rough, are hide and go seek either with you and another person, or you hide his toys and he has to find them. He's biting or nipping to get a response from you because he's bored. A Stern "No" should stop him, then distract him with an appropriate chew toy. Praise and reward when he complies. If he doesn't, stop all play and interaction until he calms down.

Most of the time this is a play behavior and secondary to teething. However I would still recommend addressing this behavior with Buddy. If you are playing with him and he starts to bite I would tell him no and stop play. Also you can try and redirect his attention to a toy or something he is allowed to chew on or bite. To Nero this is probably just play behavior but with a larger dog nipping during play like this can become dangerous, especially as Nero grows. I would recommend avoiding this type of play with him at all times. If he does ever start to nip at your during play, stop playing immediately. If you are consistent with this he will learn that this type of behavior causes you to ignore him and he will stop doing it. This is indeed common in puppies (and some adult dogs). When Julius gets riled up or too excited, stop all play until he calms down. If he bites, a stern "No" or "No bite" should get him to stop. Praise and reward him when he complies. Be firm and be consistent.

Instead of you walking away, "banish" him to another room whenever he bites. Don't use his crate, if he has one, for this. You can also spray a bitter agent, such as Bitter Apple or Phooey, on your hands, just remember to wash well before you eat or touch your face. Be patient, firm and consistent in your training. He's still young and has a way to go in learning good behaviors.
