My new puppy's breath smells strong. Is it a symptom of Parvo?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 21 days old | 10 lbs

Can a dogs breath smell like Parvo. I had two puppies die of Parvo and a few weeks or so later I got another. He's been fine so far and no symtoms. I was wondering if his breath could smell of it. Because I smelt it strongly.

There can definitely be an odor to parvo infected dogs but it is usually due to the bloody diarrhea they are experiencing and not their breath. I would be very cautious with your dog, however, if it is young and only a few weeks have passed since your had parvo positive puppies there, as it is likely still in the environment. If your dog shows any sign of illness at all (loose stools, low appetite, vomiting, lethargy), I would get to the vet right away.

I have never heard of a dog's breathe smelling like parvo but you should monitor for any abnormal signs. If you notice anything abnormal then have him examined by your vet to determine the cause. Hopefully, he has been fully vaccinated for parvo so the risk of getting the disease would be low.

The reason parvo smells a particular way is due to the blood in the stool. Many conditions, aside from parvo, can cause blood in the stool or a similar smell. Causes of diarrhea can range from a bacterial infection to poisoning. I recommend to play it safe and have a Lilo examined by the veterinarian. Bring in a stool sample for testing. I hope she feels better quickly.

Hello, that sounds more consistent with potential parasites. Parvo may intially cause brown to dark red liquid diarrhea with occasional blood. However, the only true way to know is to test the stool for parvo with a parvo test. In addition to the diarrhea puppies will also have vomiting, lethargy, and decreased appetite. Your puppies are a bit too young to have parvo as they should still have their mothers immunity they received via the colostrum. If your puppies however did not nurse from mom, then they may be at risk for parvo. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Baby. Regardless of the cause of her symptoms, she should see her veterinarian. Hydration can happen quickly in young puppies and requires treatment. Parvovirus infection is unfortunately very common in her breed. So I suspect her veterinarian will test her stool for the virus. My adopted dog has bloody diarrhea, vomiting, foul smell. Is it parvo?

Poor Baby. This could be parvovirus but usually parvo doesn't wax and wane like this. If Kyle hasn't been fully vaccinated, I would have him tested for parvo to ensure it is negative. I would also make sure they test him for different parasites including giardia. Giardia can be difficult to get rid of and they can easily reinfect themselves. The rotting meat smell is likely due to the blood in his stool. I would also feed him a bland or sensitive stomach diet. If you recently opened up a new bag of food before all this started, I would throw that bag out as it could be a bad bag. If he doesn't have any parasites, I would talk to your vet about additional diagnostics like a pancreatitis test, blood work, and x-rays. This may give your vet more information about what is going on and how to treat him. I hope this helps!

My 10-week puppy has white gums, diarrhea, heavy breathing. Is it parvo?

I'm really sorry to see this. In a 10-week old, I am very concerned about parvovirus as a cause of the signs you are seeing. The pale gums and fast breathing indicates to me that this little pup is going into shock or may be anemic from losing blood in the diarrhea. This is an emergency and she needs to go to the vet immediately to prevent life-threatening complications. In the meantime, try to keep her warm and encourage her to drink some water if she is able.
