My puppy ate prosciutto, vomited, and his heart is racing. Is he okay?

The concerning thing about prosciutto is the amount of fat in it, which can cause pancreatitis in dogs. Pancreatitis is a life threatening inflammation of the pancreas, and requires intensive veterinary treatment when an animal is affected by it. I would take Scotty into the vet, especially if he is vomiting, appears lethargic, and/or anorexic.

Yes salami is not good for dogs. withhold food for 12 hours then offer him boiled boneless chicken and rice every 6 hours in small portions. if he is eating and not vomiting, continue with this diet for 2 days. After 2 days, you can put him back gradually on his normal food. If he continues vomiting or is not eating, take him to the vet to get treatment.

Hello, I believe monitoring Murphy is fine for the time being. He may experience some vomiting or diarrhea. No you don’t need to take him to the vet right now. If he start acting lethargic, stops eating, or starts vomiting or having diarrhea, then yes I would take him to your vet then. Your vet will be able to get him started on something to help settle his tummy and make him feel better. I agree that ham isn’t the best thing to feed them, but some dogs will eat a little bit and not have a problem. Just watch him closely. I hope this helps!

You should not feed spoiled meat or other spoiled food to your dog. You are risking gastrointestinal problems such as gastritis, pancreatitis and diarrhea. That said, just because the "Best by XXXXX" date has run out, does not mean the food is spoiled. It is best to just feed your dog proper good quality dog food. It is possible that the ham was not spoiled,. but the spices and salt in the ham caused the tummy upset. If he is fine now (no diarrhea nor further vomiting) then there should be no reason to worry.

There is little to worry about with him eating a whole hot dog. The most that could happen is he ends-up with an upset stomach and has a temporary bout of vomiting and/or diarrhea. If that does happen, then it's best to feed him a bland diet for a couple of days until things get back to normal. I hope that helps and all is well with Murphy.

I’m sorry to hear about Little! I am surprised to hear about this reaction to some spaghetti but I suppose it is possible if he has a very sensitive tummy. I am more concerned that the vomiting has nothing to do with the spaghetti. Was there anything else he could have gotten into? (Trash? Medications? Chemicals/glue/paint? Socks? Other materials?) And the second question that crosses my mind is: did Little receive his full set of puppy vaccines? Could this be parvo or some other thing going on? Moral of the story, if Little has been vomiting for 5 hours, it’s time to take him into the emergency vet to get him checked out. They may offer x-rays, bloodwork, or a parvo test (if warranted). Even if you pursue no teating, the vet can give medications for the nausea/vomiting and determine if Little is dehydrated or not. If he vomited a couple times but has since just been drooling and otherwise seems ok, pick up the food and water and monitor. Reintroduce water 4 hours after the vomiting episode and a small meal 12 hours after vomiting episode. If he vomits again, head to the overnight vet clinic.
