My puppy ate plastic but is acting normal. Could she have a blockage?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The symptoms of gastrointestinal blockage include vomiting, lack of appetite, abdominal pain, no bowel movement. If Freya has been eating her food and passing stools, gut blockage is very unlikely. I suspect she may have gastrointestinal infection or food indiscretion that are responsible for the clinical symptoms. Please, take Freya to your local vets for an appointment to make sure there is nothing serious going and to get treatment for her. It probably will be a course of antibiotics or medication to regulate bowel movements.

Hello. I honestly would not rush her into an emergency clinic based on one episode of vomiting. Eating well & having normal & regular bowel movements are definitely a sign of a healthy GI tract. A blockage would make her very sick. If she continues to vomit, quits eating, develops any diarrhea, then see your veterinarian, but there is no way 1/6 of a paper towel, even in a small dog, would cause a blockage. Since she is exhibiting some signs of eating foreign material, it is very important at this point to make sure that she is not obstructed as that will require therapy. I would highly recommend you consider having her evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check on this with abdominal radiographs and proceed with therapy accordingly. Keep in mind that in some cases of an obstruction, surgery is necessary and the sooner it is diagnosed, the better the outcome tends to be. Have a good day!

Hello. With a partial obstruction, some stool could still pass by, but if Harper Grace is still eating & drinking well, & there in no belly pain, then I would not expect any kind of obstruction. Watch her over the weekend, & if she continues to eat & behave normally, then you can stop worrying. I am sorry for the loss of your mother. If you see any of these symptoms in the next 24-48hrs, you should take Rayne to your local vets as an emergency. However, if she chewed the plastic into small pieces, most likely she will pass it with her stools and she will not show any worrying symptoms at all.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If Darla still has the contents in her stomach to bring them up after a week, then there are three possibilities: 1. She is finding and eating more and bringing them up right away, and you haven't noticed her eating more. 2. They are 'bouncing around' in the stomach, not causing a blockage but not moving through either. 3. There is a blockage, however if this were the case you would likely have seen that Darla wouldn't be eating/drinking or pooping since the 23rd, and would be very sick. If Darla is vomiting, not eating, and not pooping, then she needs to go to a vet right away. Otherwise you might want to consider a scope or xrays/ultrasound to see if more are present. If she is bright, happy, eating and pooping and playing normally, you can monitor, however she is at risk of an obstruction at any time if she still has anything in her stomach that isn't food. If the vomiting continues than he could have a blockage. If he is otherwise acting ok than you could withhold food for the day and then try a bland diet of boil chicken and white rice. If the vomiting resolves, continue feeding the bland diet for a few days and then gradually switch back to his regular food. If the vomiting and diarrhea continues then he needs to be examined by a veterinarian to determine the cause. Your veterinarian can take an x-ray to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat his problem.
