My puppy ate pillow stuffing. Should I be concerned about his health?

Hi there. It could be a little too early for Snowball to pass the stuffing. We always worry any time a puppy ingests anything it shouldn't. Please watch her stools to see if anything is passing or if you note any blood in her feces, etc. If she shows any signs of vomiting or diarrhea, please take her in. Depending on the amount of stuffing she took in-she could potentially become obstructed which could make her very sick. It sounds like you're watching her very closely, good for you! It can take up to 72 hours for the stuffing to pass, so I wouldn't be worried just yet. There are a couple of possibilities if you don't see any stuffing in Ella's feces: One, she didn't actually eat any. Two, it's moving very slowly through her GI tract. Three, it is stuck in her system. Keep monitoring her and her feces through the end of the week and she's acting normal, then I would suspect she didn't actually eat any of the stuffing. I would only be concerned if Ella stopped eating, become lethargic, and developed other symptoms such as diarrhea or constipation.

Signs you'll want to keep an eye out for are vomiting, unable to keep food or water down, regurgitating shortly after meals, inappetence, and diarrhea. Hello. The first thing you need to do is recover or throw this bed away. Much depends on how much Snowind may have ingested, but most times only a small piece is ingested. Most pets are just interested in a taste & rarely eat enough to cause a problem. You should just keep an eye on him for any abnormal gastrointestinal signs such as loss of appetite, vomiting or diarrhea over the next several days. This toy stuffing may pass without problem. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. Oh dear! Puppies often chew things they shouldn't, unfortunately. If Ruben did swallow some of the foam, the biggest risk is that it could get stuck in his stomach or intestines and cause a blockage. Or, it may pass through his system with no problems at all. I would keep a close eye on him for the next 2-3 days. As long as he's eating and drinking, acting normal, and having regular bowel movements, you shouldn't need to worry. If he stops eating, has any vomiting, or does not have a bowel movement for more than 24 hours, then I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam and x-rays since these can be signs of a blockage.

Stuffing can act as a gastrointestinal foreign body that results in obstruction of the bowels. If vomiting is persistent, this is a strong indication that there may be either a partial or complete obstruction preventing food and water from moving forward in the GI tract. An abdominal x-ray would be the next best step to determine if your pet has a radiographic abdominal pattern consistent with obstruction. This should be done asap (as in today), because dehydration and irritation/trauma to the GI tract will continue worsening the longer it is present. If there is an obstruction, abdominal surgery may be necessary to remove it. And that's the case, we want your pet to be as stable as possible for the surgery. The longer the delay, the more weak and dehydrated your pet will be, and thus potentially less stable for surgery. In the meantime, I would offer only a small volume of water at a time, to see if your pet can keep it down without vomiting. I wish you both the best of luck!
