My 6-week puppy ate adult food. Is that okay? When can he eat kibble?

Most dogs this age can eat hard puppy food just fine - so if he likes it and doesn't seem to have trouble chewing it, I wouldn't worry :) If he seems to have some difficulty, you can moisten it with some warm water and let it soak for a few minutes to soften before giving it to him, or feed canned food instead.

Congratulations on your new puppy - Phoenix is absolutely adorable! Puppies begin to get their baby teeth around 5-8 weeks of age, so Phoenix is just around that age. You can check his mouth for signs of teeth eruption and begin feeding him dry food if a majority of his baby teeth are present. He can continue to have moistened puppy food, but slowly transition to dry puppy food over the next week or so.

I would not recommend feeding this food exclusively to a 6 month old dog - it is formulated for adult dogs and not for growth. It is best to feed dogs puppy food until they reach 1 to 2 years of age depending on the breed. Foods formulated for growth have different protein and mineral levels that ensure bones and joints are growing properly. If you feed an adult food it can result in nutritional deficiencies and poor growth.

Poppy is very cute! Likely she will be fine on hard puppy kibble as long as the kibble is small enough. Make sure to get a small breed puppy formula so that it has small kibble that should be easy to chew. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions.

AT 4 weeks old it is good to try to start feeding them so they can be weaned by 6 weeks old. Each puppy is different and may take to it a different times. I would try dry puppy food mixed with water so it is soft, then feed them. They may not eat at all and play in it. If that happens, skip a day or 2 and try again. You may have to place some in their mouths to teach them. They will still nurse despite being fed so it does not have to be a lot of food as they are little and can't hold very much. The better they get and the older they are, you can decrease the amount of water added to get them used to dry puppy food.

Puppy food certainly won't hurt Iggy if he only eats it for a week. The differences between puppy food and adult food are mainly in the calcium/phosphorus balance to help promote proper bone growth, as well as being a bit more calorically dense. As Jessica explained so well, it's important to mix the old and new foods together for about a week whenever possible to minimize the chance of developing stomach upset. I would also look at the caloric density (kcal per can) listed to see if you need to adjust the amount of canned puppy food that he's getting relative to the number of calories he was getting from adult food.
