Help! My puppy has a rash under its armpit. What should I do?

I have a puppy pitbull with a little rash on the armpit.

Hi there and thank you for your post! Thank you for the pictures as they are quite helpful in determining what is going on. It appears that Smoke may have an inflammatory skin condition called dermatitis. This could also be the start of a skin infection so I would monitor it for signs of worsening and take Smoke in to see your vet if it is not improving or if it is worsening. This area is a common area we see rashes develop due to the accumulation of moisture in between skin folds and chaffing that occurs in this region. One thing you can use to help lessen the occurrence of this is an over the counter product called Bio Balm. I would use this to prevent this from occurring. It is a safe natural product to use. If this does not improve, again, I would have Smoke seen by your veterinarian for further treatment. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. Poor Smoke. That area looks like it could be a scrape of some type. I've seen puppies get areas like that if they get their leash under their armpits on walks. I presume he does not have anything else on his skin that you have noticed, so I might just start with cleaning it with a gentle soap and cool water. Make sure you keep him from licking at it since that will make it worse. (You might consider putting a small T-shirt on him to keep him from licking at it.) If it is starting to ooze or get larger, you might need to have him seen for topical or oral treatment, but hopefully he will be able to heal on his own without needing further treatment.

In a young active dog chafing can be common from high activity due to the friction leading to the redness and inflammation that you are seeing currently. This area commonly stays moist and can develop a skin infection because of this. I would recommend using Malacetic Conditioning Spray (can be found online) and apply to the area twice daily until resolved. I would also recommend using a steroid spray (Petco has a spray called Well & Good Hydrocortisone spray) and apply twice daily as well to help relieve inflammation. If this does not resolve or it worsens, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Thanks for sending along the pictures- the areas there do look very red and do appear infected to me. Allergies, bacterial, fungal, or mite infections can all be possible causes. You can try the medicated shampoo again to see if it helps this time around. If it doesn't help much or if it worsens, I would recommend Oscar see his veterinarian for an exam and further evaluation. He may need antibiotics or other medications as needed.

My dog has a rash under her armpit. What causes it and how can I help?

This may be local irritation or infection. If Kiely is licking at it, place an e-collar (cone) on her. Keep the area clean and dry. This may be enough to allow for healing. If the rash worsens or spreads though, she will need to be examined by your veterinarian. Antibiotics, anti-inflammatory and/or antihistamines may be indicated depending on the diagnosis.

It sounds like he has a bacterial skin infection (puppy pyoderma). You could bathe him with a medicated dog shampoo but he may need an antibiotic and possibly a corticosteroid to treat the problem. Have your vet take a look at him to determine the best way to treat his problem.

Hello, and thank you for your question. Poor Skye. My guess is this is a severe allergic reaction as well as secondary bacterial infection of the skin. If ointments and benadryl are not helping, she will require stronger, oral medications, to control the inflammation and treat the infection. This will require a visit to the veterinarian. I would recommend this visit within the next 12-24 hours, given how uncomfortable this looks for Skye. In the meantime, you could try giving Skye a bath with a gentle aloe and oatmeal type of shampoo, just to give her some temporary relief, and hope to wash off any surface allergens that may be irritating her skin. Rinse off the shampoo thoroughly with lukewarm water afterwards, and pat dry (don't rub). I hope this helps, and your little girl is feeling better soon.
